Itanagar, October 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Northeast India growth story proves the region is now at the heart of India’s development. Speaking in Itanagar, he declared that the Northeast is no longer peripheral but a “pulsating heart of India’s progress.”
He praised Arunachal Pradesh for its growth in connectivity, infrastructure, and women-led self-help groups (SHGs). Modi added that the region is shaping India’s future through new roads, airports, and digital expansion.
PM Modi Showcases Arunachal’s Progress
During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated new connectivity projects and reviewed ongoing works in Arunachal Pradesh. He said the Northeast India growth story reflects how regional development now drives national momentum.
“The Northeast is not the end of India. It is our gateway to the East,” Modi said, linking the region to the Act East Policy that promotes trade with Southeast Asia.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the Udan regional air connectivity scheme, which links remote towns to major Indian cities. New airports and terminals at Hollongi, Dibrugarh, and Agartala now handle higher passenger volumes and cargo operations.
He said better roads, faster trains, and air connectivity are bringing jobs and tourism to Arunachal and its neighboring states.
Empowering Women and Self-Help Groups
Modi emphasized the crucial role of self-help groups in the Northeast India growth story. Over 4 lakh women across the region are now part of SHGs, running businesses in weaving, handicrafts, and organic farming.
“Women are leading India’s growth in the Northeast,” Modi said. “Their work in small industries is creating a foundation for local economies.”
Through schemes like Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana and the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, the Centre aims to double SHG income and expand training support.
In Arunachal Pradesh, SHGs have received new grants to improve bamboo-based products and food processing. These microenterprises are helping rural families become financially independent.
Connectivity Drives Growth
Connectivity remains the strongest pillar of the Northeast India growth story. Modi cited recent projects that link remote villages to India’s transport grid.
- The Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express in Mizoram saw 155% passenger occupancy in its first week, showing growing travel demand.
- The Bharatmala and Trans-Arunachal Highway projects have reduced travel time across difficult mountain routes.
- Digital connectivity through the BharatNet project now covers almost all district headquarters in the region.
These efforts have improved trade, tourism, and access to healthcare. Modi said the goal is to ensure that every northeastern state enjoys the same development pace as India’s metropolitan regions.
Arunachal Pradesh as a Growth Model
Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who shared the stage with Modi, said Arunachal has become a symbol of sustainable growth. He pointed out improvements in education, tourism, and renewable energy.
“With better airports and roads, our youth now see opportunities here at home,” Khandu said.
The Hollongi Greenfield Airport, inaugurated by Modi, has connected Arunachal to major Indian cities. It is now a key hub for passengers and cargo.
The state government also plans to develop eco-tourism projects and promote indigenous crafts through e-commerce platforms.
Northeast’s Role in India’s Global Vision
PM Modi linked the Northeast India growth story to India’s global ambitions. The region’s location makes it vital for cross-border connectivity with Myanmar, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
Projects like the India-Myanmar-Thailand Highway and Kaladan Multimodal Transport Project will boost trade and cultural ties. Modi said these initiatives reflect India’s broader vision of a connected and prosperous neighborhood.
“When the Northeast grows, India grows. Its success strengthens India’s global partnerships,” the Prime Minister stated.
Public Response and the Road Ahead
Thousands attended the Itanagar event, cheering for the Prime Minister’s message. Many young entrepreneurs and women’s groups said they feel more confident about the region’s future.
Modi concluded with a call to action:
“The development of the Northeast is the development of India. Every citizen must be part of this transformation.”
