A major controversy has erupted in Tripura after the main accused in a shocking public humiliation case walked free on bail despite the severity of the crime. The incident, which involved forcibly shaving the head of a young female content creator and two others, has triggered outrage and raised serious doubts about both police effectiveness and judicial fairness.
Mob Attack Sparks Public Outcry
According to local reports, three content creators—including a young woman—were detained by residents at Ashwini Market under Amtali Police Station in West Tripura. People suspected them of drug use and theft. Instead of informing authorities, the crowd turned violent. They assaulted the trio, shaved their heads in public, and recorded the entire act. The videos quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread condemnation. Many labeled it a brutal act that could permanently harm the victim’s dignity and future.

Police Take Action Under Public Pressure
As criticism intensified, Amtali Police moved swiftly. Officers arrested local resident Debashis Dey (28) on Tuesday morning. To showcase quick action, Officer-in-Charge Paritosh Das held a press briefing and presented Dey before the media. Assistant Sub-Inspector Kakoli Dutta also assisted in the investigation. The police projected confidence and assured the public that they would ensure justice.
Court Grants Bail, Raising Suspicion
However, the case took an unexpected turn within hours. The court granted bail to Debashis Dey the same afternoon. Reports indicate that the police could not produce sufficient evidence to oppose the bail plea. This sudden development raised suspicions, prompting many to question whether the arrest served as a genuine attempt at justice or a publicity move. Critics also accused the police of possible lapses in the report submitted to the court.
Allegations of Selective Justice
The controversy intensified as social activists highlighted contrasting judicial responses. They pointed out that while the accused in a severe public humiliation case secured bail within hours, content creator Madhavi Biswas has remained in jail for almost three months over allegations of using offensive language online. This stark difference fueled debates about inconsistent court rulings and alleged selective justice.
Rights Groups Condemn Mob Behaviour
Local residents and rights organisations strongly condemned the mob’s actions. They stressed that no one has the right to punish others or humiliate them publicly, regardless of the suspicion. They also criticised the police for failing to stop the widespread circulation of the disturbing video. According to activists, the video has inflicted deep psychological harm on the young woman, who continues to suffer from public shaming even after the incident.
Growing Concerns Over Vigilantism and Law Enforcement
The incident has once again exposed deep flaws in policing and the judiciary. It has also reignited concerns about rising vigilantism, misuse of social media, and a justice system that appears inconsistent. As more such cases emerge, public trust in law enforcement and legal institutions continues to weaken.
Residents, activists, and observers are now demanding a transparent investigation, stronger legal action against the mob, and reforms to ensure that both police and courts respond fairly and consistently in similar cases.
