Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Meghalaya and Tripura on Sunday to inaugurate several projects. He will also participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the North Eastern Council (NEC) besides presiding over meetings and addressing rallies. Officials in both the states gave this information. The Prime Minister will inaugurate a campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and other projects in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong. He is expected to reach here on Sunday morning at around 9.30 am. He will preside over a meeting at the Rajya Auditorium building after attending a program to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Council.

Members of NEC including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, other Union Ministers and MPs from Northeast are going to attend the programme. A senior official told PTI that on the occasion, the Prime Minister will release a commemorative ‘Journal’ mentioning the contribution of the Council towards the development journey of the Northeast in the last 50 years. Modi will later address a public meeting at the Polo Grounds in Shillong.

The official said that around 10,000 people are expected to participate in the rally. He told that the place where the Prime Minister will address the rally has been declared a drone flying zone. Security has been beefed up in view of the Prime Minister’s visit to these two northeastern states where assembly elections are due early next year.

West Tripura Superintendent of Police Shankar Debnath said that the Border Security Force (BSF) has also been put on alert in view of the Prime Minister’s visit. Debnath said, “BSF and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel are patrolling the border areas.”
