Pradyot Signals Sikkim? No, Tripura Land Rights Notification Soon After Amit Shah Talks

Pradyot hints at land rights notification within days after Amit Shah talks, says tiprasa rights non-negotiable

Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has indicated that a notification on land rights for the indigenous Tiprasa community may arrive within days. He said the announcement could come as early as Thursday or Friday, following his recent conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday after returning to Tripura, Debbarma said the process of implementing the land-related provisions of the 2024 Tiprasa Accord was expected to move forward. He also suggested that the Centre could invite Tipra Motha leaders to New Delhi for further discussions.

According to Debbarma, the government had earlier assured the community that implementation would begin one month after the elections. He said that the promised period had now arrived.

He expressed hope that the upcoming notification would mark a concrete step towards securing the land rights of indigenous people.

Tiprasa Rights Remain Non-Negotiable

Debbarma reiterated that protecting the rights and interests of the Tiprasa people remained his foremost priority. He stressed that he would not compromise on their future, regardless of political circumstances.

He also said that Tripura could not achieve meaningful development unless its indigenous population received its rightful entitlements.

Addressing concerns among the community, he urged people not to lose hope. He reaffirmed his commitment to protecting their land rights and constitutional safeguards.

Debbarma also highlighted the importance of unity among the Tiprasa people. He referred to the principle of ‘Thansa’, which promotes collective strength and unity beyond political differences.

He said internal divisions should not weaken the community’s common demands. Instead, people should remain united while pursuing their rights through dialogue and democratic engagement.

Further Discussions Expected in New Delhi

The Tipra Motha founder indicated that another round of discussions could take place in New Delhi. These talks are expected to focus on the implementation process and recommendations concerning the land issue.

He said the party would consider the recommendations emerging from the discussions. However, he emphasised that the government should avoid unnecessary delays.

The proposed discussions follow a series of meetings between Debbarma and senior government representatives. On October 29, he met Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Chief Secretary J K Sinha to discuss the implementation of the accord.

Debbarma described those discussions as positive. He also said the government had assured him that it would implement the agreement within a fixed timeframe.

The Chief Minister had earlier indicated that the state government would examine the provisions and take forward measures that were practically feasible. Land rights formed an important part of those discussions.

The 2024 Tiprasa Accord and Its Unfinished Commitments

The Centre, the Tripura government and Tipra Motha signed the tripartite Tiprasa Accord in March 2024. The agreement aimed to address long-standing concerns of Tripura’s indigenous population.

It covered several important issues, including land rights, political safeguards, economic development, identity, culture and language.

However, the implementation of key provisions has remained a major demand of Tipra Motha. The party has repeatedly urged the Centre and the state government to fulfil the commitments made under the agreement.

Land protection remains particularly important because indigenous communities have raised concerns about their rights, identity and control over traditional areas.

The party has also demanded stronger constitutional and administrative safeguards for the indigenous population. Greater financial and administrative autonomy for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) has featured in its wider demands.

Calls for Unity and Peaceful Coexistence

Alongside his demand for land rights, Debbarma stressed the importance of maintaining peace and harmony among Tripura’s different communities.

He has previously called for a development process that addresses the grievances of indigenous people without harming other communities. He also emphasised the need for peaceful coexistence between Bengalis and Tiprasa people.

According to him, the future of children from both communities must remain a priority.

The latest indication of a possible notification has raised expectations among Tiprasa people. However, the government has yet to publicly confirm the proposed announcement or provide details of the specific land-related measures.

For now, the next few days could prove important for the implementation of the accord. A formal notification would represent a significant development, although the community’s wider demands will still require detailed discussion and implementation.

Debbarma has made his position clear: political differences cannot take priority over the rights and future of the Tiprasa people.
