The couple, identified as a retired education department employee and his spouse, were allegedly targeted by their former caretaker, who entered their home under the pretext of a casual visit. Within minutes, the situation escalated into violence, leaving both victims injured and terrified.

The shocking incident has sparked outrage across the Nagaon district, raising concerns about the growing number of crimes targeting elderly residents living alone.

Former Caretaker Turns Attacker

According to preliminary reports, the accused had worked as a caretaker for the couple for several years before being dismissed due to disputes over conduct and money. Despite the fallout, the man reportedly maintained occasional contact with the family, which may have given him access to the house.

Police sources said the former caretaker arrived at the couple’s home on Saturday afternoon. Once inside, he allegedly attacked them with a blunt object and demanded money and valuables.

The victims, caught off guard, tried to resist but were overpowered. The attacker then fled with cash, jewellery, and other household items, leaving the couple injured on the floor.

Neighbours later discovered the couple in a semi-conscious state and alerted the local police. Both victims were rushed to Nagaon Civil Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Police Launch Swift Investigation

Nagaon Police have launched an intensive investigation into the case. A team from Morikalong Police Outpost was deployed immediately after receiving the report. The accused, identified as the couple’s former caretaker, was arrested within hours from a nearby village.

During the arrest, police reportedly recovered a portion of the stolen valuables, along with blood-stained clothing believed to have been used during the attack. Investigators are now interrogating the suspect to determine whether others were involved.

Nagaon Superintendent of Police assured that the case is being handled with utmost urgency, calling it “a crime of betrayal and violence against vulnerable citizens.”

The officer added that charges under sections related to robbery, assault, and criminal trespass have been registered, and the investigation is continuing to uncover the full chain of events.

Community in Fear After the Attack

Residents of Morikalong, a quiet locality known for its close-knit community, expressed deep shock over the incident. Many described the retired official as a kind and respected individual who had served the education department for decades.

The attack has left the neighbourhood shaken. Locals have now started taking extra precautions, installing CCTV cameras and strengthening household security. Some have also called for increased patrolling in the area, especially during night hours.

“We never thought something like this could happen here,” said one neighbour. “He was like family to many of us. We feel betrayed that someone who once worked for them could do this.”

Rising Concern Over Crimes Against Senior Citizens

The incident has reignited discussions about the safety of senior citizens in Assam. With more elderly couples living independently, the risk of targeted crimes has increased.

Social activists and local organizations have urged authorities to strengthen community policing and create helplines dedicated to elderly safety. They argue that elderly people, especially retired government employees, often fall victim to those who know their routines and vulnerabilities.

Experts believe that trust-based crimes, such as this case, are particularly alarming as they erode social confidence and community security.

Police have also advised residents to be cautious while hiring domestic workers or caretakers and to verify their backgrounds thoroughly through the local police station.

A Call for Justice and Safety

As the couple recovers from their injuries, family members and local residents have demanded strict punishment for the accused. They said that such crimes must serve as an example to deter others.

Local civic bodies have also appealed to the administration to provide financial and medical support to the victims. The incident, they say, exposes the need for more awareness and community-driven vigilance in semi-urban and rural parts of Assam.

Police officials stated that they will soon submit the charge sheet once the forensic reports are received. The investigation will also look into the possibility of any accomplices who might have helped in planning or executing the robbery.

Assam Police Urge Vigilance

Following the Nagaon case, Assam Police have reiterated their commitment to citizen safety. A spokesperson urged residents to report suspicious individuals or unusual activities immediately.

Authorities are also working to strengthen the “Suraksha” initiative a state-level community policing program aimed at ensuring safety for senior citizens and vulnerable groups.

The department plans to increase awareness drives across Nagaon and nearby regions, encouraging citizens to adopt safety measures and build stronger neighbourhood watch systems.

The Road Ahead

The Morikalong attack serves as a grim reminder of how trust can be exploited for personal gain. While the swift arrest of the suspect has brought relief to the community, the emotional scars remain deep.

The incident underscores the urgent need for both public awareness and administrative vigilance. For Assam’s elderly population, especially those living alone, safety must now become a collective priority.
