Sanfida Nongrum Ends India’s 23-Year Goal Drought at AFC Women’s Asian Cup with Debut Strike

Young Indian forward Sanfida Nongrum scripted a memorable moment in Indian women’s football by scoring on her senior international debut, ending a 23-year wait for an Indian goal at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

The 20-year-old striker found the back of the net in the 52nd minute of India’s opening match against Vietnam women’s national football team at the Perth Rectangular Stadium. Nongrum came on as a substitute at half-time and made an immediate impact, giving India a crucial moment of hope in the match.

Although India eventually lost the contest, Nongrum’s goal marked a significant milestone for the national side, which had not scored in the tournament for more than two decades. Her strike symbolized India’s return to the continental competition’s scoresheet and highlighted the emergence of a promising young talent.

Speaking after the match, Nongrum expressed mixed emotions about her debut performance. While she was pleased to score her first international goal, she also admitted disappointment over the late defeat.

“I’m happy to score my first goal on my debut for India, but I feel bad that we lost in the last moments,” she said. “We will learn from this match and move forward with the same determination when we face Japan.”

India head coach Amelia Valverde praised the young striker’s contribution and explained the decision behind the half-time substitution. According to the coach, tactical adjustments were needed to gain better control of the game.

“We made changes at half-time to try and gain more control. Sanfida performed very well. She had already shown good form during the training camp,” Valverde said. “It was her debut match on such a big stage, and I’m sure it will remain a special day in her career.”

From Shillong to the International Stage

Nongrum’s journey to the national team began in Shillong, where she first developed an interest in football through her cousin. Her early training started at the academy of Royal Wahingdoh FC when she was just six years old.

She quickly progressed through local district and state-level tournaments. At the age of 12, she competed in the prestigious Subroto Cup. Two years later, she represented Meghalaya at the Sub Junior Girls’ National Football Championship, further strengthening her reputation as a promising footballer.

At 15, Nongrum moved to Bengaluru to pursue professional training with Bangalore United FC under the guidance of former India goalkeeper Chitra Gangadharan.

Her club career continued to grow in the Indian Women’s League. Nongrum first represented Sirvodem Sports Club during the 2021–22 season before joining Sports Odisha the following year.

Later, she moved to Garhwal United FC, where she emerged as a key figure in the squad. As one of the senior academy players, she captained the team to the IWL 2 title during the 2024–25 season.

In December 2025, Nongrum also scored a spectacular long-range goal that helped Garhwal United register their first-ever victory in the Indian Women’s League.

Support from Family and State

Behind Nongrum’s success lies the unwavering support of her family. Her father works as a driver while her mother is a homemaker, and both have consistently encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

“My family always tells me never to give up,” Nongrum said. “In football you can win, lose or draw, but the most important thing is to keep going and keep working hard.”

Her achievement has also drawn praise from Meghalaya’s leadership. Conrad Sangma congratulated the young striker for her historic feat.

“Sanfida Nongrum, Meghalaya’s daughter representing India, scored India’s first goal in 23 years at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. She is also the first woman from our state to represent India in the senior football team,” Sangma said. “Such talent and sportsmanship from a young woman from a small town truly deserves appreciation.”

Nongrum’s debut goal not only marks a personal milestone but also serves as a moment of pride for Meghalaya and Indian women’s football. More importantly, it offers inspiration to aspiring young athletes across the country who dream of representing India on the global stage.
