The Union Cabinet has officially approved the establishment of a second Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, marking a milestone in India’s commitment to improving higher education in the Northeast.
This move gives Assam the distinction of being the first state with two IIMs. It also strengthens Guwahati’s position as a key academic and economic hub in the region.
Why Guwahati Deserves a Second IIM
Guwahati already hosts some of the country’s top institutions, including IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University, and multiple national research centers. Its strategic location and growing infrastructure make it ideal for a second IIM.
Addressing Growing Demand
For years, students from the Northeast have struggled to access top-tier management education close to home. With only IIM Shillong serving the region, many students had to migrate or settle for less competitive institutions.
By adding another IIM in Guwahati, the government is responding to growing demand. This decision gives aspiring business leaders and entrepreneurs in the Northeast better access to world-class education.
Key Features of the New IIM Guwahati
The new institute will offer courses aligned with emerging business trends. Its curriculum will focus on:
- Technology and digital transformation
- Sustainability and social entrepreneurship
- Public policy and rural innovation
- International business, especially in Southeast Asia
Initially, the IIM will admit 120 students, with plans to expand to over 1,000 seats in five years. Classes may begin in a temporary facility by 2027, while the permanent campus takes shape.
Boost to Regional Economy and Job Market
The impact of this new IIM goes beyond education. It will create over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs. From faculty recruitment to construction, hospitality, and local vendors, many sectors will benefit.
“We expect a wave of economic activity once the campus construction begins,” said Dr. Namrata Choudhury, an economist at Gauhati University.
Local businesses, hotels, and transport operators will also gain from the influx of students, faculty, and visitors.
Supporting Local Entrepreneurs
In addition to academics, the IIM will support startup incubation and entrepreneurship development. The focus will be on promoting local industries like tea, handloom, eco-tourism, and sustainable agriculture.
Through mentorship and funding support, the IIM will help budding entrepreneurs from Assam and nearby states scale their ventures.
Promoting Inclusive Education
The government also plans to introduce special scholarships for students from tribal and economically weaker sections. These initiatives aim to improve access and build leadership among underrepresented communities.
“This institution will help us grow our own leaders,” said education activist Raktim Bordoloi. “Students from remote villages will now have a shot at a world-class business education right here.”
How the Decision Aligns with National Goals
The second IIM in Guwahati supports India’s broader Act East Policy. It encourages integration between the Northeast and Southeast Asia through trade, education, and diplomacy.
It also supports the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes equity, access, and global competitiveness.

Government’s Vision for the Future
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the cabinet meeting, called this decision a “visionary step for the Northeast.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to creating centers of excellence across all regions of India.
Soon, land acquisition and infrastructure development will begin. Authorities expect to finalize temporary facilities within the next 12 months.
What This Means for Students and the Region
The new IIM will give Northeast India a powerful tool for growth. It will develop skilled professionals who understand the region’s unique challenges and strengths. It will also retain talent that otherwise leaves for metros like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru.
This step reflects a belief that excellence in education should not be limited to the big cities.
