Later, organisers moved the festival to the RBDSA Sports Complex at Madan Kurkalang, Bhoirymbong. The venue hosted major editions in 2023 and 2024.
For the 2025 edition, the festival moved back towards Shillong and used the area around the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Polo Grounds.
Organisers then announced the New Shillong Highland Grounds as the permanent venue for 2026. However, public demand has now prompted the festival to return to Madan Kurkalang.
Madan Kurkalang Has Hosted Major International Acts
Madan Kurkalang has already established itself as a major venue for the festival.
The 2023 edition, held from November 17 to 19, featured Grammy-winning R&B singer Ne-Yo, former Boyzone member Ronan Keating and DJ-producer Jonas Blue.
Indian band Sanam and several artists from Meghalaya and the Northeast also performed during the event.
The venue offered multiple stages, food and beverage areas, shopping spaces and entertainment zones. Therefore, it became capable of hosting large festival crowds.
2024 Festival Attracted Thousands of Visitors
The festival returned to Madan Kurkalang in 2024 with another major international line-up.
Artists including Akon, Clean Bandit, Boney M and R3HAB performed at the festival. National artists such as Jasleen Royal and Kanika Kapoor also joined the programme.
Local acts, including Khasi Bloodz and Great Society, added a strong regional presence.
According to Meghalaya Tourism, the 2024 festival recorded a footfall of around 58,000. The large attendance highlighted the venue’s ability to accommodate a major music and tourism event.
2026 Line-Up Includes Khalid, Swae Lee
The return to Madan Kurkalang comes as the festival prepares for another international line-up.
Khalid, Swae Lee and American pop-rock band Boys Like Girls have been announced as the first international headliners for the 2026 edition. Organisers are expected to announce two more international headliners.
Khalid is known for popular tracks such as Young, Dumb & Broke, Location and Better. Swae Lee is widely known for Sunflower, while Boys Like Girls have built a following with songs such as The Great Escape.
Festival Supports Meghalaya’s Tourism Economy
The Cherry Blossom Festival has grown into one of Meghalaya’s major music and tourism events. It attracts visitors from different parts of India as well as international travellers.
Moreover, recent editions have combined international performances with Indian and regional artists, food, art, fashion and cultural programmes.
The Meghalaya government has also promoted large-scale music events as part of efforts to develop the state’s concert economy. Such events can generate business activity across hotels, restaurants, transport, retail and event services.
Why Was the Venue Changed?
Organisers initially planned to hold the 2026 festival at the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mawkhanu. They presented the venue as a permanent location for major concerts and festivals.
Plans for the site included multiple entry and exit points, parking facilities and traffic-management arrangements. The location also aimed to improve access for visitors travelling from Jowai, Assam and nearby areas.
However, organisers have now reversed that decision and will stage the 2026 festival at Madan Kurkalang.
