Shillong’s premier healthcare institute, the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), has sounded a public health alarm. Doctors at the institute have highlighted a strong link between smoking and spinal disc damage, particularly the increased risk of slipped or herniated discs.
The warning comes after a successful minimally invasive spinal surgery conducted by NEIGRIHMS specialists. The patient, who had suffered a severe slipped disc, underwent a procedure in which four large fragments of the damaged disc were carefully removed.
Smoking Can Weaken Spinal Discs
Speaking to the media, Dr. Borgohain, a spine specialist at NEIGRIHMS, explained that smoking exposes the body to toxic hydrocarbons that gradually damage the collagen fibers in the outer ring of spinal discs.
“These fibers are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the disc structure. Once they are weakened, the disc becomes vulnerable to rupture or herniation, which is commonly known as a slipped disc,” he said.
The lower back region is often the most affected, and patients may experience severe pain, numbness, or weakness in their legs when the herniated disc presses on surrounding nerves.
NEIGRIHMS Performs Successful Spine Surgery
The patient treated at NEIGRIHMS had been suffering from intense lower back pain and difficulty walking. After diagnostic imaging confirmed a severe disc herniation, doctors opted for a minimally invasive spinal procedure.
“Four large fragments of the disc were removed successfully,” Dr. Borgohain said. “Post-surgery, the patient’s pain has reduced significantly, and he is expected to recover well with proper physiotherapy and lifestyle changes.”
The successful outcome highlights the capabilities of NEIGRIHMS in advanced spine care, making it a key medical center in the Northeast for neurosurgical and orthopedic treatments.
Public Health Advisory: Quit Smoking for Spine Health
NEIGRIHMS doctors have issued a strong advisory to the public. Quitting smoking not only reduces the risk of spinal disc degeneration but also improves overall musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health.

“Many people associate smoking only with lung diseases or heart problems. But it also affects the bones, joints, and spine. Smokers are at a much higher risk of chronic back pain and mobility issues in later life,” Dr. Borgohain cautioned.
The doctors stressed that early diagnosis and lifestyle modification are essential. Maintaining good posture, regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding smoking can go a long way in protecting spinal health.
Rising Concern of Spine Disorders in Northeast India
With changing lifestyles and a rise in sedentary habits, Northeast India is witnessing an increase in back pain and spine disorders among both young and elderly populations.
According to NEIGRIHMS experts, a significant portion of patients reporting with slipped discs or chronic back pain are smokers or have a history of tobacco use.
The institute has also planned to launch awareness programs about the hidden orthopedic risks of smoking. These campaigns aim to educate people about the long-term effects of tobacco on the spine and overall health.
Prioritize Spine Health
Doctors have urged citizens to take preventive measures seriously.
“Quitting smoking today is the first step towards a pain-free and active future,” Dr. Borgohain said. “If you have persistent back pain, seek medical help early rather than self-medicating. Prevention is always better than cure, and lifestyle changes can save you from complex surgeries in the future.”
With this strong advisory, NEIGRIHMS hopes that the public will understand the link between smoking and spinal disc damage and take timely action to protect their health.
