Sonowal Propels Ayurvedic Expansion: Foundation for Second College in Assam

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal initiated a significant step in healthcare development by laying the foundation stone for the second Ayurvedic college in Assam. The ceremony took place at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district, marking a historic milestone in the state’s traditional medicine sector.

Reviving Ayurveda in Assam

This establishment is particularly noteworthy as it signifies the revival of Ayurveda in Assam after a hiatus of 76 years. Sarbananda Sonowal, during the event, shed light on Assam’s rich heritage of traditional medicine and lamented its neglect in previous administrations, particularly under Congress-led governments.

In his address, Sonowal emphasized the necessity of a robust healthcare system that integrates both modern and traditional medicine for holistic patient care. This dual focus aligns with the current government’s commitment to revitalizing traditional medicine, a stark departure from the alleged neglect observed in the past.

The upcoming Ayurvedic college, estimated to cost Rs 70 crore, is poised to be a cornerstone in healthcare education. Initially accommodating 100 students for the undergraduate course (BAMS), the college also plans for future expansions, including postgraduate courses. The campus will boast essential facilities such as a herbal garden and a unit dedicated to the manufacturing of Ayurvedic medicines.

In addition to the Ayurvedic college, Sonowal virtually laid the foundation stones for two 50-bed AYUSH hospitals in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts of Assam. These hospitals, with a combined investment of Rs 30 crore, aim to enhance healthcare facilities in the region and provide accessible healthcare services to the residents.
