Tai Ahom Community Presses ST Status Demand in Meeting with Rahul Gandhi

Representatives of the Tai Ahom community in Assam convened with senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Lakhimpur district. The primary agenda of the meeting revolved around advocating for the inclusion of the Tai Ahom community in Assam in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.

ST Status: Unfulfilled Promises by BJP Government

The Tai Ahom representatives expressed their dissatisfaction, accusing both the central and Assam BJP-led governments of reneging on promises to grant ST status to the community. The Congress party highlighted the urgency of addressing this unmet commitment, emphasizing the community’s call for justice.

Key figures from the Assam Congress, including state unit president Bhupen Borah and leader of the opposition in the Assam assembly Debabrata Saikia, participated in the meeting with Rahul Gandhi. The collective effort underscored the significance of the Tai Ahom community’s concerns, aligning with the broader objectives of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Rahul Gandhi’s Visit to Bordowa ‘Batadrava’ Xatra

In contrast to the BJP’s focus on the Ram Temple inauguration in Ayodhya, senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, are set to visit the Bordowa ‘Batadrava’ Xatra in Nagaon district. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared this information, specifying Rahul Gandhi’s plan to pay homage to Sri Sri Shankardev ji at Bordowa Xatra on January 22.

Historical Significance of Bordowa Xatra

Bordowa holds special historical significance as the birthplace of Srimanta Sankadev, a revered 15th–16th century Assamese polymath. Srimanta Sankadev, known for his multifaceted contributions to Assam’s cultural and religious landscape, established the Bordowa Than in 1468. The site became a center for practicing and preaching the newly found faith in Puran and Bhagwat.
