Tawang Tourism Mart now puts Arunachal on global stage

Tawang Tourism Mart is set to bring Arunachal Pradesh’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and tourism opportunities into sharper international focus as Tawang prepares to host the 14th International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026.

The Union Ministry of Tourism and the Arunachal Pradesh government will jointly organise the event in Tawang from October 29 to 31. The mart will bring together tourism stakeholders from India and abroad and provide a platform to promote the Northeast as a diverse travel destination.

The event marks the return of the International Tourism Mart to Tawang after more than a decade. The district last hosted the event in 2013, when the mart highlighted tourism opportunities across the Northeast and brought international buyers and media representatives to the region.

Global audience to explore Arunachal

The Tawang Tourism Mart will focus attention on the state’s Himalayan landscape, Buddhist heritage, Monpa culture, adventure activities and eco-tourism potential.

This could create opportunities for tourism businesses to connect with new markets.

The Union Tourism Ministry has also invited tour operators and influencers from 27 countries, including Bhutan, Japan, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. Participation, however, remains subject to confirmation.

Culture remains central to the event

Beyond scenic attractions, the Tawang Tourism Mart is expected to place Arunachal Pradesh’s cultural identity at the centre of tourism promotion.

Tawang is known for its Buddhist traditions and Monpa heritage, while the wider state offers a wide range of tribal cultures, festivals, crafts, food traditions and community-based experiences. Presenting these features to international visitors can help broaden the understanding of Arunachal beyond its mountain landscapes.

Moreover, the event can give local tourism operators an opportunity to present experiences directly to travel professionals who serve domestic and overseas markets.

Preparations focus on smooth hosting

Preparations for the Tawang Tourism Mart have been underway for several months. A preliminary coordination meeting in July reviewed accommodation, transportation, security, venue readiness, hospitality, event management and the proposed programme. Officials also inspected the Guwahati-Tawang route and several facilities in the district.

In September, Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona chaired a preparatory and review meeting that examined security, transport, accommodation, logistics, protocol and coordination among departments. The review highlighted the importance of ensuring a smooth experience for delegates and visitors.

The preparations also involve local tourism stakeholders, including tour and taxi operators. District officials have sought their participation as Tawang prepares for the international gathering.

Tourism opportunities beyond Tawang

For Arunachal Pradesh, the platform offers a chance to highlight destinations beyond Tawang as well. The state has varied landscapes, wildlife, cultural traditions and adventure tourism opportunities spread across its districts.

Furthermore, greater exposure can support discussions around investment, travel connectivity and sustainable tourism. The state government has said the event could open new avenues for tourism promotion, investment and sustainable economic development.

Tawang takes centre stage again

The return of the Tawang Tourism Mart places the border district at the centre of a major national tourism event once again. Its selection also gives Arunachal Pradesh an opportunity to present its cultural richness and tourism potential directly to an international audience.

With the October event approaching, attention will now turn to the participation of global travel stakeholders and the experiences presented during the mart. Overall, the gathering could strengthen Tawang’s role as a gateway for visitors seeking Himalayan landscapes, living cultural traditions and new travel experiences in Arunachal Pradesh.
