TIPRA Motha video allegations have reached the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC), with the party seeking action over a clip it says was digitally manipulated during the ongoing Village Committee election process.
The party claims footage from a peaceful campaign march was combined with provocative audio from an unrelated protest. It has asked the poll panel to investigate the clip and take steps against those responsible.
TIPRA Motha video complaint reaches SEC
TIPRA Motha General Secretary and Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma submitted the complaint to the SEC. Workers associated with Youth Tipra Federation president and TTAADC member Suraj Debbarma also raised the issue with the commission.
According to the complaint, the video uses visuals from a TIPRA Motha election march but carries audio from another event. The party alleges that the altered clip creates the impression that objectionable slogans targeting communities were raised at its campaign programme.
Party seeks action over alleged edited clip
TIPRA Motha has asked the SEC to identify the people, political groups or social media accounts involved in creating and circulating the alleged manipulated content. It has also requested coordination with police and cybercrime authorities.
According to the party, the complaint includes original campaign footage, the audio it says came from an unrelated protest and links to posts where the disputed clip was circulated.
What the TIPRA Motha video allegedly shows
The central dispute concerns whether the audio and visuals in the clip came from the same event. TIPRA Motha says they did not.
Suraj Debbarma said the video could mislead voters and create tension between communities during the election campaign. He also said the party’s stated political principle of “Thansa” is based on unity among communities in Tripura.
However, allegations about who created or circulated the clip remain subject to verification. The party has not established publicly that a particular individual or political organisation produced the video.
SEC to examine allegations
The complaint comes as political activity intensifies before the Village Committee elections scheduled for September 28. According to Hub Network, SEC Secretary Anurag Sen said the commission would examine the complaint and that the State Election Commissioner had been informed.
Sen reportedly said appropriate action would follow the findings of the inquiry. This means the complaint is currently an allegation under examination rather than a finding that the video was fabricated.
The SEC’s review could establish whether the video was edited, where its audio originated and whether its circulation breached election-related rules. Until then, claims about the intent behind its circulation remain disputed.
Village Committee polls enter key phase
The controversy has emerged during a significant stage of Tripura’s Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The SEC said 10,936 candidates filed 10,958 nomination papers for 4,597 seats. TIPRA Motha fielded 4,371 candidates, while the BJP submitted 1,974 nominations, according to figures reported earlier this month.
After scrutiny and withdrawals, many seats were settled without a contest. Reports said TIPRA Motha candidates secured a large share of those uncontested seats, while polling remains scheduled for the contested constituencies.
Poll panel faces test over digital content
The TIPRA Motha video complaint adds another challenge for election authorities as campaigning continues online and offline. Social media clips can spread quickly, making verification important when parties dispute their authenticity.
For the SEC, the immediate issue is to determine the facts surrounding the disputed material. TIPRA Motha has asked for swift action to prevent what it describes as misleading content from affecting voters.
The commission’s findings will clarify whether the video was manipulated and whether further action is warranted under applicable election rules. The inquiry may also help establish the source of the disputed audio. Until then, the allegations should be treated as claims made by the party, not as established facts.
