Train Services Resume in Northeast After Dima Hasao Landslide

Train Services Northeast

In a major relief for commuters and businesses, train services in the Northeast resumed today after being disrupted by a massive landslide in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. Railway officials confirmed that after overnight efforts, debris was cleared and tracks restored, allowing trains to operate safely.

Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide late Wednesday night near Jatinga Lampur station in Dima Hasao. Tons of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees fell onto the tracks, halting several trains bound for important destinations in Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram.

“The landslide was severe. Nearly 500 cubic meters of debris had to be removed,” said NFR spokesperson Sabyasachi De.

No casualties were reported. But the disruption caused delays in passenger movement and goods transportation across the region.

Railways Swing into Action to Restore Train Services Northeast

Railway teams from Lumding and Badarpur divisions worked through the night, deploying excavators, bulldozers, and manual labor to clear the blocked section.

“Our priority was the safety of passengers and restoration of train services in the Northeast at the earliest,” De said.

By early Friday, inspection trolleys ran on the tracks to check for stability. The first goods train was allowed through around 6 am, followed by passenger services.

Train Services Northeast: Major Routes Affected

The disrupted routes included critical connections from Guwahati to Silchar, Agartala, and Imphal.

Although, passengers faced long wait times at stations, with many trains canceled or rescheduled.

“I was travelling to Silchar for work. It’s a relief the train services in the Northeast are back,” said passenger Anupam Das at Guwahati station.

Goods trains carrying fuel, food grains, and essential commodities were also delayed, sparking concerns over supply shortages in remote states.

Safety Measures Put in Place

North East Frontier Railway has deployed engineers to monitor soil stability in the affected zones.

Warning systems and patrols have been intensified to detect fresh landslide threats during the ongoing monsoon season.

“Dima Hasao is prone to landslides. We’re strengthening slopes and improving drainage to ensure safer train services in the Northeast,” said a senior railway official.

Northeast’s Rail Connectivity Crucial for Economy

The rail network serves as a lifeline for the Northeast, enabling faster, cheaper movement of goods and people.

Industries, traders, and farmers rely on it for transportation of raw materials, produce, and manufactured goods.

“A day’s disruption affects businesses and inflates prices in the region,” noted economist Dr. Ananya Deka.

Smooth train services in the Northeast are also vital for tourism, connecting scenic destinations like Haflong and Jatinga.

Political Leaders Praise Quick Restoration

Political leaders across the Northeast praised railway workers for swiftly restoring services.

“I commend the railways for reopening lines so quickly. The Northeast’s connectivity is crucial,” tweeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also expressed relief over the resumption of services. Further, highlighting the importance of uninterrupted rail connectivity for his state.

Long-Term Solutions Needed

Experts warn that frequent landslides threaten to disrupt train services in the Northeast repeatedly during the monsoon.

“We need advanced technology like rockfall barriers, slope nets, and early-warning systems,” said geologist Dr. Bijoy Deb.

Railway authorities have promised further investment in landslide mitigation measures under the “Mission Zero Disruption” initiative.
