In the Tripura Assembly Election , the newly formed political party can play the role of ‘Kingmaker’ of ‘Tipra Motha’ and in this election it will be contested by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) alliance and Congress-Left Front alliance.

Will be with Tipra Motha, led by Pradyot Manikya Debbarman, a former scion of the royal family, has refused to forge an alliance with the BJP, the Congress and the Left Front, but has joined hands with any party supporting its demand for a separate state of ‘Greater Tipperaland’. The possibility of post-poll alliance has not been ruled out.

Tipra Motha’s spectacular performance in TTAADC Election

‘Tipra Motha’ had won 18 out of 30 seats in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in the elections held in 2021. ‘Tipra Motha’ has decided to contest the assembly elections alone and is hopeful of winning 20 tribal-dominated seats. Let us tell you that these seats will be very important in the northeastern state with a total of 60 members.

BJP fielded 55 candidates Election

In this election, the ruling BJP has fielded 55 candidates and has left only five seats for its ally IPFT. The alliance partners will fight a friendly election battle on the Ampinagar assembly seat in Gomti district as the IPFT will contest a total of six constituencies in the elections to be held on February 16.

Public’s trust in IPFT decreased

The BJP-IPFT alliance ended the 25-year-long rule of the Left Front in the 2018 assembly elections. The BJP won 36 seats, including 10 ST (Scheduled Tribe) reserved constituencies, while its alliance partner won eight seats. However, according to political observers, IPFT has started losing popular support due to its failure to fulfill its core demand of Tipraland state.

Royal family still respected

Experts believe that Tipra Motha’s popularity grew not only because he raised the demand for a separate state, but also because the tribal community still respects the then royal family and calls Pradyot Debbarman as ‘Bubagara’ or king. 

They say all political parties in the northeastern state the BJP, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI) and the Congress had approached Debbarman for an electoral settlement but no agreement has been finalized so far because of Tipra Motha’s hardline stand on Greater Tipperaland.

BJP leader and Balai Goswami said that in the event of a triangular contest, the BJP would have an edge over Tipra Motha and the Congress-Left Front alliance as the anti-BJP votes would be split between them.

Pabitra Kar said the Congress-Left alliance is expected to benefit from the fight between Tipra Motha and the BJP as the BJP’s ally IPFT has lost strength in the hills but is still loyal to the CPI(M) in the tribal areas. are supporters. Anthony Debbarman said that his party would emerge as a ‘kingmaker’ by winning at least 25-26 seats. Polling for the Tripura Assembly will be held on February 16 and the counting of votes will be done on March 2.
