Tripura Begins Issuing PVC Ration Cards to PDS Beneficiaries

Tripura’s Food and Civil Supplies Department has started issuing PVC ration cards to beneficiaries, replacing the older paper-based documents. The move is aimed at improving durability, convenience, and transparency in the distribution of essential commodities.

In the first phase, a total of 4.87 lakh PVC cards will be distributed out of 9.91 lakh family ration cards. The remaining cards will be issued in subsequent phases after beneficiaries complete their e-KYC verification, according to Sumit Lodh, Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department.

“As part of the modernization plan, we have introduced PVC ration cards, which are more durable and resistant to damage or dirt, even during heavy rains,” Lodh said while addressing the media. He added that the new cards will reduce the risk of loss or wear and tear, ensuring smooth access to PDS benefits for all eligible families.

In addition to PVC cards, the department has announced plans to upgrade 600 government fair price shops into model outlets for better consumer service. Each ration dealer selected for the upgrade will receive Rs 5,000 to enhance their shop facilities and provide an improved shopping experience for beneficiaries. Currently, Tripura has a total of 2,072 PDS outlets across the state.

Addressing concerns regarding food quality, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury emphasized that the department prioritizes the distribution of high-quality commodities through the PDS network. “We procure pulses and other essentials in bulk. While occasional consignments may be substandard, the department remains committed to ensuring that only the best quality items reach the public,” he said.

Under the PDS scheme, consumers in Tripura currently receive rice, sugar, flour, kerosene, and tea leaves at subsidized rates. The introduction of PVC cards is expected to make the process more efficient, reduce fraudulent claims, and ensure that benefits reach the intended families without delays or discrepancies.

Officials noted that the modernization drive is part of a larger initiative to make the PDS system more transparent, user-friendly, and technologically advanced. By replacing paper cards with PVC cards, the department aims to minimize errors, eliminate duplication, and enhance the overall experience for beneficiaries.

The rollout of PVC ration cards is being closely monitored by government authorities, and feedback from the first phase will be used to improve subsequent distribution efforts. Beneficiaries are advised to complete their e-KYC registration promptly to receive their new cards and continue accessing PDS services without interruption.

With these measures, Tripura is taking significant steps to ensure that the public distribution system remains efficient, reliable, and beneficiary-centric, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to social welfare and food security.
