Tripura CM Charts New Industrial Policy to Boost Pineapple, Bamboo and Timber Economy

Manik Saha pushes Tripura tea towards self-reliance as TTDC slashes losses by nearly 50 per cent

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced a clear roadmap for a new industrial policy during a review meeting with the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) and the Industries Department at the state secretariat. He said the state must use its natural resources more effectively to support industrial growth.

Focus on Jobs and Rural Development

Dr. Saha emphasized that the policy aims to increase employment and strengthen the rural economy. He pointed out that Tripura produces several high-value natural items. However, farmers still fail to receive proper returns. For example, Tripura’s famous “Queen” pineapple has a strong national and international demand, yet cultivators struggle to earn fair prices.

Plan to Create a Pineapple Auction Centre

To address this problem, the chief minister suggested setting up a pineapple auction centre in Tripura. This centre, he said, will bring buyers from across the country and even abroad. As a result, farmers will gain access to better prices. Moreover, a formal auction system will improve the marketing process and boost the fruit’s visibility in larger markets.

Bamboo and Timber to Drive New Industries

Dr. Saha also highlighted the huge economic value of Tripura’s bamboo and timber. These forest-based products can earn high revenue if marketed properly. Additionally, he noted that soft timber can support small industries, especially in the production of matchsticks and matchboxes. He asked TIDC to examine this possibility without delay.

Expanding Use of Local Natural Resources

The chief minister encouraged officials to identify more natural materials that can support new industries. Tripura has a wide range of local resources, including aromatic plants, medicinal herbs, and forest produce. These items can help supply raw materials to existing industries or support new manufacturing units. Furthermore, they can create steady income for rural communities.

Towards a Stronger Industrial Future

Dr. Saha said the new industrial policy will focus on innovation, value addition, and better logistics. With stronger marketing channels and improved infrastructure, Tripura can expand its reach in both national and international markets. He added that consistent planning will help the state grow into a competitive industrial hub and support long-term development.
