Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha highlighted key issues addressed during the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held in Shillong. The session brought together chief ministers and officials from the northeastern states, along with Union ministers, to discuss pressing concerns and chart a course for the region’s development.
Dr. Saha emphasized that the ongoing situation in Bangladesh played a central role in the discussions. The state of Tripura shares a long border with the neighboring country, making developments there significant for the region’s stability. He noted that maintaining harmonious relations with Bangladesh is essential for fostering trade, ensuring border security, and managing trans-border issues effectively.
The Chief Minister spoke about internal security challenges in the northeastern states, stressing the need for sustained efforts to combat insurgency and illegal activities along the borders. Dr. Saha underlined the importance of coordination between state governments and central agencies to address these challenges. He mentioned that Tripura has made notable strides in reducing insurgency-related violence, which he attributed to better policing, intelligence-sharing, and infrastructure development in remote areas.
Combating the drug menace also featured prominently in the discussions. Dr. Saha stated that drug trafficking remains a major concern for the northeastern states due to their proximity to international borders.
