Tripura Congress Sees Village Committee Poll Results as Political Revival

Agartala, Tripura: Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on October 6 described the party’s performance in the recently concluded Village Committee elections as an early sign of political revival in Tripura’s tribal areas. Roy Barman claimed that around 14 independent candidates backed by the Congress had won seats in the polls.

He said the number could increase to 20–22 after the final results are compiled. The Congress leader also indicated that some winning independent candidates could join the party soon. He said the results could help strengthen the Congress organisation in the tribal belt.

Key Facts

Congress Claims Growing Presence in Tribal Areas

Roy Barman said the Congress entered the Village Committee elections with limited expectations because its organisational presence in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region had remained weak for several years.

He said the latest results could mark the beginning of a fresh political journey for the Congress in the state’s tribal areas.

“Sometimes we depended on TUJS, sometimes on IPFT, INPT and sometimes TNV. Now we have just started walking,” Roy Barman said, referring to regional political organisations that the Congress had relied on in the past.

According to the Congress MLA, preliminary figures showed that about 14 independent candidates supported by the party had secured victories. He added that the figure could reach 20–22 once all results are officially compiled.

Roy Barman further claimed that several victorious independent candidates may join the Congress in the coming days. If that happens, the party could gain additional organisational strength in the tribal belt.

Roy Barman Comments on BJP’s Election Claims

While discussing the results, Roy Barman also criticised the BJP’s presentation of its performance.

He claimed that the BJP had won around 18.7 per cent of the seats on its own but was presenting the outcome as an NDA victory.

Roy Barman contrasted this with Tipra Motha’s approach, saying the regional party was presenting its victories under its own political identity rather than describing them as an NDA achievement.

He also criticised proposed victory celebrations by the BJP and IPFT. However, he maintained that the Congress did not intend to undermine the performance of other political parties.

“Irrespective of political affiliation, we congratulate all those who have won,” he said.

Village Committee Polls and Tribal Politics

The Village Committee elections were held in areas under the TTAADC and provided an important indicator of the organisational reach of political parties and regional groups in Tripura’s tribal areas.

For the Congress, the reported victories are significant because the party has been seeking to rebuild its presence in areas where regional political organisations have traditionally played a major role.

The final results and the political decisions of the winning independent candidates could determine whether the Congress can convert the recent performance into a stronger organisational base.

Congress Eyes Upcoming Municipal Elections

Looking ahead, Roy Barman said the Congress was preparing for the upcoming municipal elections in Tripura.

He indicated that the party could contest the elections independently if the CPI(M) also decided to fight on its own.

The development could lead to a wider contest among major political parties and regional forces in the state.
