Key Facts

Congress Announces Independent Electoral Plan

The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee held a key meeting to discuss the upcoming elections. After discussions, the leadership decided to contest the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election independently.

Moreover, the party also decided to field candidates in all 28 elective seats of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections. The ADC polls are scheduled for next month.

Leaders Raise Concerns Over Alliance Coordination

However, the decision also highlights growing differences within the opposition alliance. Earlier, senior leader Sudip Roy Barman expressed dissatisfaction over the actions of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

According to him, the CPI(M) leadership announced a candidate for the Dharmanagar by-election without consulting Congress leaders. Therefore, the move created resentment within the party.

Roy Barman pointed out that the Congress had contested the Dharmanagar seat during the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections. Hence, he said the unilateral announcement by CPI(M) surprised many Congress leaders.

Unanimous Decision at PCC Meeting

The meeting was chaired by state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha. Several senior leaders attended the meeting.

Among them were Sudip Roy Barman, Birajit Sinha, and tribal leader Shabda Kumar Jamatia.

After detailed discussions, the PCC members unanimously agreed on the electoral strategy. As a result, the Congress will contest both elections independently.

Congress Expresses Confidence Before Elections

Later, while speaking to the media, Asish Kumar Saha explained the party’s decision.

He said the CPI(M) leadership never contacted the Congress before announcing its candidate. Therefore, the Congress decided to move forward with its own candidates.

Furthermore, Saha expressed confidence about the party’s performance in the upcoming elections. According to him, Congress workers have strengthened the party across the state during the last two years.

He added that the party has worked actively in both urban and tribal areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

Regional Political Context

Political developments in Tripura often influence the wider politics of Northeast India. The state frequently witnesses alliances between national and regional parties.

Therefore, decisions taken by major parties such as the Congress can affect the political landscape before elections.
