Tripura CPI(M) Demands High-Level Probe Into Death of BJP Councillor Rahul Kishore Roy

The opposition CPI(M) in Tripura has demanded a high-level investigation into the death of BJP councillor Rahul Kishore Roy of Dharmanagar Municipal Council. CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of Opposition Jiten Chowdhury alleged that serious accusations made by the councillor’s wife against newly elected MLA Jawhar Chakraborty and his wife Barnali Goswami require an independent inquiry. The controversy began after Rahul Kishore Roy allegedly died by suicide on May 4 following an attack on his residence in Dharmanagar. Meanwhile, Barnali Goswami filed a police complaint against a social media activist for allegedly spreading defamatory allegations against her and her husband. The incident has intensified political tension in Tripura.

Key Facts

CPI(M) Demands High-Level Investigation

Leader of Opposition Jiten Chowdhury on Friday demanded that the Tripura government form a high-level investigation team to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of BJP councillor Rahul Kishore Roy.

Speaking to media persons at the CPI(M) state headquarters in Melarmath, Chowdhury said the allegations made by the councillor’s wife were serious and required more than a routine police inquiry.

Rahul Kishore Roy served as a councillor of Ward No. 5 under the Dharmanagar Municipal Council. Reports claimed that he allegedly died by suicide on the night of May 4.

Allegations Made by Councillor’s Wife

According to CPI(M) leaders, Rahul Kishore Roy’s wife Ananya Bhattacharjee accused newly elected Dharmanagar MLA Jawhar Chakraborty and his wife Barnali Goswami of being responsible for an alleged attack on their residence at Nazrul Sarani on May 4 night.

She reportedly claimed that the attack and humiliation faced by family members pushed her husband into emotional distress.

Jiten Chowdhury said Ananya Bhattacharjee had named specific individuals who allegedly attempted to storm their residence.

He urged the government to conduct a proper inquiry in line with instructions reportedly issued by Chief Minister Manik Saha.

The CPI(M) leader described the death of Rahul Kishore Roy as “extremely painful and heart-wrenching,” adding that the councillor was a young political worker.

CPI(M) Leaders Visit Vandalised Residence in Jirania

Apart from raising the demand for an inquiry, Jiten Chowdhury and former MP Sankar Prasad Datta also visited the residence of senior CPI(M) leader Tapan Das in Jirania.

According to CPI(M) leaders, local BJP workers allegedly stormed and vandalised the residence of Tapan Das.

Party leaders claimed that Tapan Das currently stays mostly in Agartala because of fear of political attacks.

The matter was reportedly brought to the notice of Jirania police, but CPI(M) leaders alleged that authorities had not taken action so far.

The opposition leaders condemned the alleged vandalism and demanded strict police action against those involved.

Barnali Goswami Files Police Complaint

Meanwhile, Barnali Goswami lodged a complaint at Dharmanagar police station against a social media activist.

She accused the activist of spreading defamatory and false allegations linking her and her husband to the alleged induced suicide of Rahul Kishore Roy.

Barnali Goswami requested police authorities to take legal action against the individual for circulating “scurrilous” accusations on social media platforms.

However, sources in Dharmanagar alleged that pressure was also being created to prevent police from conducting a high-level inquiry into the incident. Officials have not officially confirmed these claims.

Political Tension Increases in Tripura

The incident has triggered fresh political tension in Tripura, especially in Dharmanagar and nearby areas.

Both ruling and opposition parties have traded allegations over political violence, law and order, and police response.

Political observers believe the issue could become a major point of confrontation between the BJP government and the CPI(M) opposition in the coming days.

So far, police have not released a detailed public statement regarding the allegations made by both sides.
