AGMC Doctors Achieve Major Medical Milestone
Doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital achieved a major breakthrough by performing a rare and highly complicated surgery for portal hypertension and liver-related complications.
The patient, a 42-year-old resident of Udaipur, had suffered from severe abdominal pain, swelling, and repeated vomiting of blood for a long period. As his condition worsened, he sought treatment at the hospital’s Department of Gastroenterology and Gastro-surgery.
After extensive medical examinations, gastro-surgeon Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra diagnosed the patient with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. Doctors immediately recommended advanced surgical intervention to prevent further complications.
Doctors Planned Complex Surgery Carefully
Considering the patient’s fragile condition, Dr. Mitra consulted cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Kanaknarayan Bhattacharya. Subsequently, both specialists decided to perform a “Splenorenal Vascular Shunt” surgery along with splenectomy.
The procedure aimed to reduce portal hypertension and improve the patient’s declining hemoglobin levels. However, due to the patient’s unstable health condition, doctors shifted him to the Cardiovascular Department on April 6, 2026.
Over the following month, the medical team monitored him closely and provided specialized treatment to stabilize his health before surgery.
Five-Hour Surgery Conducted Successfully
A 10-member surgical team jointly led by Dr. Kanaknarayan Bhattacharya and Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra successfully completed the operation on May 13.
During the five-hour surgery, doctors removed the damaged spleen and implanted a vascular shunt connecting the portal vein to the renal vein. As a result, the procedure helped reduce dangerous pressure in the liver’s blood circulation system.
In addition, cardiovascular anesthesia specialists Dr. Rimjhim Chakma and Dr. Manimoy Debbarma managed anesthesia and post-operative monitoring throughout the operation.
Patient Recovering Steadily
Doctors stated that the patient currently remains under observation in the CTVS ICU. Moreover, they confirmed that his condition is stable and improving steadily. The patient has already started consuming oral fluids, which doctors described as a positive recovery sign.
The medical team called the surgery the first successful procedure of its kind in Tripura. Earlier, patients requiring such advanced treatment had to travel to other states for specialized healthcare services.
Supporting technicians and scrub nurses, including Sudipta Mandal, Ratan Mandal, Arpita Sarkar, Moushumi Debnath, Sourav Shil, Annabahadur Jamatia, Jaydeep Chakraborty, Abhijit Deb, Minhajuddin, and Sourav Tripura, also played important roles during the surgery.
Furthermore, the patient’s family thanked the doctors, healthcare staff, and hospital administration for providing the expensive treatment free of cost under government healthcare support.
Importance of Tripura in Northeast Healthcare
Tripura continues to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure in Northeast India. Advanced surgeries at government hospitals like AGMC and GBP Hospital reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state and improve access to specialized treatment for people across the region.
