Tripura Government has sanctioned ₹554 lakh in financial assistance for 11,000 students belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC). The announcement was made by Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Santana Chakma during a press interaction in Agartala on Sunday.
The minister said the initiative is part of the state’s ongoing welfare measures aimed at supporting economically disadvantaged communities and ensuring access to education. The assistance will help students cover essential educational expenses, including tuition fees, books, and other academic requirements.
According to Chakma, the Social Welfare Department will soon issue detailed guidelines regarding the distribution process, eligibility criteria, and timelines. “Our aim is to ensure that no deserving student is left behind due to financial constraints,” she said.
The minister also highlighted the government’s recent fiscal achievements, stating that ₹277 crore had been recovered through enforcement actions. This recovered amount, she noted, would be redirected towards strengthening social welfare programs and introducing new schemes.
Chakma further announced that several new welfare initiatives are in the pipeline and will be rolled out in the coming months. These schemes will focus on enhancing educational opportunities, improving social security measures, and uplifting marginalized communities across the state.
The decision to allocate ₹554 lakh to OBC students aligns with the state government’s broader strategy to improve literacy rates and human development indicators in Tripura. Officials believe that targeted educational support will not only empower individual students but also contribute to the socio-economic development of the state.
The Social Welfare Department has urged eligible students and their families to stay informed through official notifications to ensure timely application and disbursement of funds. The government also plans to streamline the application process by incorporating digital platforms for transparency and faster processing.
This initiative comes at a time when Tripura is working to expand its educational infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The government has recently increased budget allocations for school development, scholarships, and vocational training programs.
Educational experts have welcomed the announcement, stating that such financial assistance can significantly reduce dropout rates among students from marginalized communities. They emphasized that sustained and well-monitored scholarship programs play a crucial role in bridging socio-economic gaps in education.
Minister Chakma concluded her address by reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive growth. “Education is the foundation of empowerment. By investing in our students today, we are investing in a stronger, more prosperous Tripura tomorrow,” she said.
With the sanctioning of this fund, thousands of OBC students are expected to receive much-needed financial relief, enabling them to continue their education without interruption. The upcoming release of detailed guidelines will provide clarity on the distribution mechanism and timelines, ensuring that the benefits reach the intended recipients efficiently.
