Tripura MLA Philip Kumar Reang Criticizes CM Manik Saha’s Remarks at Hojagiri Festival

Tripura MLA Philip Kumar Reang has condemned Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s recent remarks about the origin of the Bru (Reang) community, stating that the comments have hurt the sentiments of the community and called for a public clarification from the event organizers.

The controversy arose during the inaugural day of the 33rd State-Level Hojagiri Festival held at Bokafa on Wednesday night, where Chief Minister Manik Saha addressed the gathering. While speaking about the state’s cultural diversity, the Chief Minister reportedly made a statement referring to the history and identity of the Bru/Reang people, which some community members found inaccurate and disrespectful.

Following the event, MLA Philip Kumar Reang expressed deep disappointment, saying such remarks had “disheartened the sentiments of the Reang community.” He urged the organizers of the festival to issue a public statement addressing the matter and clarifying the intent behind the Chief Minister’s comment.

“The Reang (Bru) people have a long and proud history that forms an integral part of Tripura’s heritage. Any public remarks that misrepresent or undermine that identity are unacceptable,” Philip said, emphasizing the need for sensitivity and respect in cultural discussions.

The Hojagiri Festival holds special significance for the Reang community, being one of their oldest and most vibrant cultural celebrations. It is marked by traditional performances, the famous Hojagiri dance, and showcases of tribal art, crafts, and heritage. The festival serves as an annual reminder of the Reang people’s enduring spirit and contribution to Tripura’s cultural mosaic.

Philip Kumar Reang further stated that such incidents highlight the need for greater awareness about tribal history and identity among leaders and the general public. “Understanding and acknowledging the cultural roots of each indigenous group is vital to maintaining harmony and unity in Tripura,” he added.

The MLA appealed to all sections of society to uphold mutual respect and sensitivity toward tribal traditions, cautioning that even unintentional remarks could cause emotional distress to historically marginalized communities like the Reang/Bru.

The incident has sparked conversations on social media, with several community members echoing Philip Reang’s sentiments and urging for responsible representation of tribal heritage at official events.

As of now, neither the Chief Minister’s Office nor the event organizers have issued a statement regarding the matter. However, community leaders have expressed hope that the issue will be resolved through dialogue and understanding.
