Probe Into Former DGP Anurag Dhankar’s Death
Tripura Police is continuing its investigation into the death of former DGP Anurag Dhankar. In-charge DGP GS Rao told reporters at the police headquarters that officers were working to complete the probe soon.
Rao described the case as sensitive and sensational. However, he did not provide a specific date for the completion of the investigation.
Dhankar was found dead in the washroom of his chamber at the state police headquarters on July 20. Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier informed the Tripura Assembly that the death was “suicidal in nature”.
Dhankar had held several important investigative assignments during his career. He headed the Central Bureau of Investigation’s probe into the ₹13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud involving diamond merchant Nirav Modi.
He also led a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that reinvestigated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Tripura Plans Smart Border Management
Tripura is also moving ahead with plans to strengthen security along its international border with Bangladesh.
According to Rao, authorities have fenced 806 km of the 856-km border. However, some stretches remain unfenced because of difficult terrain, water bodies and dense forests.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Tripura in June and announced plans for a smart border management system. The proposed approach would combine technology, local administration and security personnel to improve monitoring.
Rao said Tripura Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) had prepared proposals in line with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ plan. Authorities intend to implement the initiative in phases.
The system could help improve surveillance in areas where conventional fencing presents challenges.
Over 10,000 Personnel for Durga Puja Security
Meanwhile, Tripura Police has prepared extensive security arrangements for Durga Puja, which begins on October 17. The festival is one of the state’s biggest annual celebrations.
Rao said more than 10,000 personnel from the Tripura State Rifles and state police would be deployed across Tripura during the festivities.
In Agartala, authorities plan to install around 180 CCTV cameras at key locations. These cameras will help monitor crowds and strengthen surveillance during the celebrations.
Police will also establish a green corridor to ensure the smooth movement of ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
Agartala is expected to host around 450 community Durga Puja celebrations. Therefore, crowd management, traffic control and public safety remain major priorities for the authorities.
