Tripura witnessed renewed unrest at the end of 2025 after a video allegedly showing Sukumar Debbarma, a Village Council Chairman linked to the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP), verbally abusing Chakma traders in Narkel Kunj surfaced online. Shortly afterward, the footage spread rapidly across social media platforms, triggering widespread condemnation.
Across the state, political leaders, student bodies, and civil society groups criticized the remarks. Many observers described the language as racially offensive and damaging to communal harmony.
Tensions Rise Amid Angel Chakma Murder Case
The controversy unfolded during an already sensitive period following the killing of Angel Chakma. As a result, the incident had sparked large-scale protests and renewed calls for accountability. Moreover, public frustration increased after police named six accused in the case, most of whom are reportedly Nepali nationals.
Against this backdrop, the viral video further heightened tensions. Consequently, concerns grew that such incidents could deepen ethnic and communal divisions in Tripura.

Political Reactions Pour In
Soon after the video gained traction, BJP MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma publicly condemned the alleged conduct. According to him, such behavior reflects a worrying rise in intolerance within the region. He further warned that inflammatory speech could erode long-standing social harmony.
Meanwhile, several other political figures echoed similar concerns. In addition, many called for strict action to prevent hate speech from becoming normalized.
Student Groups Step Up Pressure
Earlier on Tuesday, Chakma student organizations held a press conference in Agartala. During the event, student leaders demanded swift and decisive action. They stated that the alleged abuse amounted to an attack on dignity and identity.
Furthermore, the groups urged authorities not to downplay the incident. In their view, ignoring such behavior could encourage further discrimination.
Party Suspension Letter Circulates
By Wednesday evening, a suspension letter began circulating on social media platforms. Reportedly issued by the TIPRA Motha Party’s 12 Takarjala Block president, the document claimed that Sukumar Debbarma had been relieved of party responsibilities.
However, no immediate confirmation came from the party’s central leadership. At the time of reporting, the TMP president and chairman had not released an official statement.
Pradyot Debbarma Calls for Unity
In response to the growing outrage, TIPRA Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma addressed the issue publicly. Through a series of social media posts, he appealed for unity and restraint among communities. Additionally, he urged national media outlets to focus more attention on the Northeast.
According to him, despite the region’s role in safeguarding India’s borders, its people continue to face racial stereotyping. Such labeling, he warned, often fuels alienation.
Clarification on Murder Case
While addressing the Angel Chakma murder, Pradyot Debbarma clarified that the crime was not motivated by tribal or religious identity. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that society remains divided along ethnic and linguistic lines.
Therefore, he stressed the need for collective responsibility. In his view, unity is essential to protect the interests of future generations.
Demand for Police Accountability
In a direct response to BJP MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma, the TMP chief confirmed that he had instructed party leaders to suspend Sukumar Debbarma. Additionally, he urged the MLA to demand the resignation of a police officer.
The officer is accused of downplaying the murder and delaying the filing of an FIR by three days. Consequently, Pradyot Debbarma said such lapses weaken public trust in the justice system.
Focus on Restoring Social Harmony
Despite ongoing political disagreements, Pradyot Debbarma emphasized that communities in the Northeast must not view each other as adversaries. Instead, he urged leaders to confront forces that undermine justice and social cohesion.
Ultimately, he called for dialogue, restraint, and mutual respect to help restore peace in Tripura.
