Sepahijala Identified as Top Cultivation District
Sepahijala district has recorded the highest cannabis cultivation in Tripura. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha shared this information in a written reply to an unstarred question in the State Assembly.
Several MLAs, including Ranjit Debbarma, Nirmal Biswas, Sudip Sarkar, Nayan Sarkar, and Leader of Opposition Jiten Chowdhury, raised the issue. In response, the government presented detailed data on anti-drug operations.
Large-Scale Destruction of Cannabis Crops
Security forces have intensified their crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation across the state. Between 2023 and 2025, they destroyed ganja crops spread over 12,479.98 hectares of land.
During this period, officials cut down more than 5.24 crore cannabis plants. As a result, authorities eliminated illegal produce worth approximately ₹54 crore.
Seizure and Disposal of Ganja
In addition to field destruction, agencies also seized large quantities of processed ganja. Following court directives, अधिकारियों carried out disposal operations under strict supervision.
The High Level Drug Disposal Committee (HLDDC) and the State Level Drug Disposal Committee (SLDDC) monitored the process. Consequently, officials burnt 1,33,418.625 kg of seized ganja at designated sites in Bodhjung Nagar Industrial Estate.
Arrests and Legal Action
Police have taken action against individuals involved in illegal activities. Authorities arrested two persons for possession of ganja.
Moreover, they arrested 15 others for obstructing crop destruction drives. Officials have already filed charge sheets in these cases. Therefore, the legal process is underway to ensure accountability.
