Tripura to Open Ambedkar Memorial Hostel for SC Students

The Tripura government will open the Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hostel in Agartala for Scheduled Caste (SC) male college students from across the state within the next one to two months. SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das announced the decision on October 1 after inspecting the hostel. The facility has around 100 beds, but only 15 to 16 students currently occupy it. Therefore, the government plans to use the vacant accommodation for students from economically weaker families. The move aims to help SC students who struggle to afford rent, food and other living expenses in Agartala.

Key Facts

Government Plans Repairs Before Opening

Minister Sudhangshu Das inspected the hostel and reviewed its facilities before announcing the decision.

According to the minister, the government will first complete essential maintenance work. The repairs will include work on doors and windows, furniture and other facilities required for students.

Officials from the SC Welfare Department have received instructions to complete the work within the planned timeframe. As a result, the hostel could become available to more eligible students within one to two months.

Vacant Seats to Help More Students

The hostel can accommodate around 100 students. However, only 15 to 16 students currently stay there.

The department had previously tried to fill the vacant seats through newspaper advertisements and appeals to elected representatives. However, the response remained limited.

Now, the government plans to make the facility available to SC male college students from different parts of Tripura.

Support for Economically Weaker Students

Many students from rural and economically weaker families move to Agartala for higher education. However, accommodation and daily living costs can create financial pressure.

The hostel will provide an affordable residential option for eligible students. Therefore, the initiative could reduce the financial burden on families while helping students continue their college education in the state capital.

The government has also provided facilities such as computers and an open-air gym at its SC hostels, according to the minister’s inspection remarks.

Staffing Issues in Welfare Hostels

Das also highlighted staffing challenges affecting welfare institutions.

According to the minister, the SC Welfare Department does not directly recruit staff for schools and hostels. Instead, the School Education Department generally handles such appointments.

He said this arrangement can create difficulties when employees do not want postings outside their home districts. Consequently, some welfare institutions may face challenges in maintaining their regular operations.
