Tripura University Misses Out on NIRF 2025 Top 100, Sparks Concern Over Declining Standards

Tripura University has once again failed to secure a place among the top 100 institutions in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, both in the overall and university categories. The absence of the state’s lone central university from the prestigious list has triggered disappointment within the academic community and renewed debate over the institution’s performance and governance.

While leading institutes such as IIT Madras, IISc Bengaluru, JNU, Delhi University, and Banaras Hindu University continue to dominate the top positions, Tripura University’s name was found only in the lower bands of 101–150 and 151–200 rankings, marking a continued slide in its standing.

Faculty members and stakeholders have attributed the decline to alleged irregularities and poor management under the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain and current Registrar Dr. Deepak Sharma. Critics argue that academic standards, research output, and administrative transparency have been seriously compromised in recent years.

“Tripura University has been weakened in every aspect — from academic integrity to infrastructure and financial discipline. Corruption and mismanagement over the years have led to this decline,” remarked a senior faculty member, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The poor ranking has raised concerns not only about the institution’s reputation but also about its impact on thousands of students in Tripura who depend on the university for higher education and research opportunities.

With the release of the NIRF 2025 rankings, educationists are calling the omission of Tripura University from the top 100 a wake-up call for immediate reforms. They have urged urgent steps to restore accountability, strengthen governance, and revive academic excellence in order to bring the university back on track.
