Security personnel at Agartala Railway Station detained a woman on Thursday after she was found in possession of 3 kilograms of dry ganja during a routine checking drive. The seizure has once again highlighted the growing challenge of drug trafficking through key transit points in Tripura.
According to officials, the woman was intercepted while attempting to board a train. During luggage inspection, authorities recovered a significant quantity of cannabis concealed in her belongings. She was immediately taken into custody, and preliminary questioning was conducted on the spot.
Following the recovery, a specific case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against her. The accused is currently under interrogation, and officials have indicated that further investigations are underway to determine whether she is linked to a larger network of traffickers operating in the region.
Tripura has long been vulnerable to the illicit drug trade due to its proximity to international borders. Cannabis cultivation and smuggling have been reported from various parts of the state, with consignments often being transported to other regions of India. Railway stations and highways are considered key routes for such illegal activities, prompting law enforcement agencies to step up surveillance.
In recent years, authorities in Tripura have intensified their crackdown on narcotics-related offenses. Several arrests and seizures have been made, reflecting the administration’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking. Officials emphasized that such vigilance will continue, particularly in sensitive locations like railway stations, bus terminals, and border checkpoints.
Commenting on the latest incident, an officer involved in the operation stated, “We are committed to tackling drug smuggling with zero tolerance. Strict action will be taken against those involved in such activities under the NDPS Act.”
The accused woman will be produced before the court, and the case is expected to proceed under the stringent provisions of the law. Authorities are also trying to trace the source of the seized ganja and identify possible collaborators.
This incident serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by drug trafficking in the northeast and the need for constant vigilance by law enforcement agencies to protect society from the harmful impact of narcotics.
