TWJA Welcomes Major Reforms in Journalist Pension and Accreditation Rules

The Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA) has welcomed the state government’s decision to revise the Tripura Journalists Pension Scheme, 2021, and the Tripura Media Representatives Accreditation Guidelines, 2020. The updated rules introduce several journalist-friendly changes that improve eligibility and access to benefits.

Income Limit Removed From Pension Criteria

One of the most significant reforms removes the income ceiling that earlier restricted journalists from receiving pension benefits if their annual family income crossed ₹3 lakh. With this limitation gone, more working and retired journalists can now secure financial support under the scheme.

TWJA had consistently asked the government to remove this restriction. The association argued that the income cap unfairly excluded many eligible journalists who needed support after years of service.

Service-Based Eligibility Introduced

The government also adjusted the eligibility criteria. Journalists who complete 25 years of professional experience and hold government accreditation for at least 10 years will now qualify for pension benefits, even if they are under 60 years old. This change acknowledges long-term contribution rather than linking eligibility solely to age.

Pension to Continue Until Charges Are Proven

The revised guidelines also ensure fair treatment in legal or disciplinary situations. If someone raises allegations against a journalist, the government will continue their pension benefits until the charges are proven. This prevents misuse of complaint mechanisms and protects journalists from unfair suspension of benefits.

TWJA Appreciates Government Response

TWJA members recently met the Chief Minister and presented their demands again. After the discussion, the Chief Minister assured a positive review of the proposals. The updated rules now reflect many of the points raised by the association.

The TWJA expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister, the Cabinet, and officials from the Information & Cultural Affairs Department. The association said the decision demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting and supporting the media community.

Expectations for Future Improvements

While the TWJA praised the new reforms, it also expressed hope that remaining demands will receive attention soon. The association believes the government will continue adopting policies that strengthen the rights, welfare, and professional environment of journalists in Tripura.
