Violence broke out in Hezamara, Tripura, on Sunday during a BJP programme when unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked the gathering. The incident left several people injured, including BJP leader Mangal Debbarma and journalist Kamal Kanti Tripura, who sustained serious injuries.
The clash occurred at the Hezamara Community Hall, where the BJP had organized a community event to distribute traditional Rignai-Risa clothes to locals. The programme was part of the Seva Parv initiative, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday and the upcoming Durga Puja festivities. According to party workers, a group of assailants stormed the venue, disrupted the event, and carried out a violent assault that injured multiple attendees.
Former Chief Minister and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb, who visited the injured at GBP Hospital, condemned the incident. Without directly naming any political party, Deb described the attackers as “miscreants” and assured that strict action would be taken. He further stated that an FIR would be filed and confirmed having spoken with Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma regarding the matter.
Despite this, several local BJP leaders and injured party workers alleged that the attack was carried out by Tipra Motha-backed supporters. They claimed it was a deliberate attempt to disrupt the programme, where MP Biplab Deb was expected to attend.
The violence has triggered heightened political tension in the region, particularly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to visit Tripura tomorrow. Concerns are being raised over the law-and-order situation as the state prepares for the festive season.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and security has been tightened in the area to prevent any further escalation. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation and is expected to intensify political debates in the state in the days ahead.
