The Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, chaired several High-Level Task Force (HLTF) meetings with Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur, focusing on building world-class tourist circuits in the Northeast. The initiative aims to transform the region into one of India’s most sought-after travel destinations.
Scindia said the plan will blend sustainable development with cultural preservation. “The Northeast has immense potential. Our goal is to make it a world-class tourism hub,” he stated.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Chairs Tourism HLTF
During one of the meetings, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired the tourism HLTF, outlining his vision to make Meghalaya a key part of the world-class tourist circuits Northeast project.
Sangma emphasized collaboration between states, better road networks, and eco-friendly infrastructure. He said, “Tourism can empower local communities. We must ensure quality, sustainability, and accessibility.”
The state’s proposed projects include upgrading tourist amenities at Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki, and Shillong, with a focus on sustainable practices and community-led tourism.
Assam’s River Tourism and Manipur’s Heritage Focus
In the HLTF, Assam presented plans to boost river and wildlife tourism by developing new circuits around Majuli Island and Kaziranga National Park. These destinations already attract visitors for their unique natural beauty and biodiversity.
Meanwhile, Manipur proposed projects highlighting its heritage and cultural circuits, including historic sites in Imphal and community tourism near Loktak Lake. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh noted that improved connectivity and facilities will encourage both domestic and international travel.
These proposals align with the DoNER Ministry’s broader plan to create interlinked circuits that allow travelers to explore multiple states under one tourism route.
Central Support for Integrated Tourism Corridors
Scindia affirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and DoNER Ministry will jointly fund and monitor these projects. The focus will be on developing integrated corridors connecting popular destinations through upgraded roads, digital services, and eco-friendly infrastructure.
He added that this initiative will generate employment, boost regional connectivity, and attract private investments. The government will extend support through key schemes like the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) and PM-DevINE.
Connectivity: The Foundation for Growth
Improved connectivity remains essential for the world-class tourist circuits Northeast plan. Under the UDAN regional air connectivity scheme, new routes now connect Guwahati, Imphal, Shillong, and Dibrugarh to major Indian cities.
Road infrastructure has also improved under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, enabling smoother interstate travel. The Holongi Airport in Arunachal Pradesh and expansion of Guwahati’s international airport are set to further increase tourist arrivals.
These upgrades not only reduce travel time but also attract investors and hotel chains eager to tap into the region’s emerging tourism potential.
Promoting Culture and Sustainability
The HLTF meetings also prioritized cultural tourism. Each state will integrate local festivals, crafts, and cuisines into the new circuits. Assam’s Bihu, Meghalaya’s Nongkrem Dance Festival, and Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival will serve as signature attractions.
Scindia emphasized that cultural identity should remain central to the project. “Tourism must celebrate the Northeast’s soul—its people, traditions, and landscapes,” he said.
Moreover, the ministry encouraged eco-friendly infrastructure, including solar-powered facilities, waste management systems, and responsible tourism guidelines.
Local Communities as Tourism Partners
One key highlight of the world-class tourist circuits Northeast initiative is the involvement of local communities. Villages will host homestays and craft markets, ensuring residents benefit directly from tourism revenue.
The DoNER Ministry plans to train local youth as tour guides and hospitality workers under skill development programs. This move aims to create jobs while strengthening community ownership of tourism assets.
The Road Ahead: Northeast as a Tourism Powerhouse
Industry experts believe this initiative can position the Northeast as a global tourism hotspot within a decade. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the region’s visitor numbers have risen steadily, with domestic arrivals growing by 12% annually since 2021.
To ensure steady progress, the DoNER Ministry will monitor each state’s HLTF implementation. Periodic reviews will help fast-track projects and address challenges like environmental clearance and land acquisition.
