Agartala witnessed strong public protests on Friday as members of the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) staged a demonstration against controversial remarks made by Bangladesh’s National Citizens Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah. The leader allegedly threatened to separate India’s northeastern states from the country, triggering widespread outrage across Tripura.
The protest took place near the Circuit House area, where YTF activists blocked roads and raised slogans condemning the statement. Protesters termed the remarks “provocative and irresponsible,” warning that such rhetoric could seriously undermine regional harmony and strain diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.
YTF Condemns “Provocative” Remarks
Addressing the gathering, YTF leaders said Abdullah’s comments reflected a dangerous mindset that disrespects India’s sovereignty and unity. They stressed that statements calling for the division of India’s northeastern region were unacceptable and could destabilize peace in the border areas.
Leaders also reminded Bangladesh of its historical ties with India, recalling that Bangladesh achieved independence in 1971 with India’s decisive political, military, and humanitarian support. They asserted that India had played a crucial role during the Liberation War and that the foundation of Bangladesh’s independence rests on India’s assistance.
According to YTF, maintaining friendly and cooperative relations with India remains essential for Bangladesh’s economic growth, regional security, and long-term stability. They urged political leaders across the border to refrain from issuing statements that could fuel tensions or mislead the public.
TSF Issues Counter Warning
Adding a sharper tone to the protest, leaders of the Tripura Students’ Federation (TSF), who joined the demonstration, warned that continued threats against India would not go unanswered. TSF leaders stated that if hostile rhetoric persists, they could raise demands to separate Cox’s Bazar beach from Bangladesh and declare it as “Tipra Land Beach.”
Although the statement was symbolic in nature, TSF leaders said it served as a strong message against attempts to question India’s territorial integrity. They emphasized that mutual respect and diplomacy must guide relations between neighboring countries.
Tight Security in Agartala
The protest prompted heightened security measures across the Circuit House area. Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak confirmed that sufficient police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order. He stated that authorities closely monitored the situation and ensured that the demonstration remained peaceful.
Traffic movement in the area was temporarily disrupted due to road blockades, but no untoward incidents were reported. The situation later returned to normal following the protest.
The incident has once again highlighted the sensitivity of cross-border political statements and their impact on regional sentiments, particularly in India’s northeastern states.
