Zubeen Garg PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya are facing fresh legal proceedings in separate disproportionate-assets cases registered by Assam’s vigilance authorities. The cases concern allegations that the former personal security officers possessed assets or handled financial transactions beyond what could be explained through their known sources of income.
The two men had earlier approached a court for bail, but their pleas were rejected. They later moved the Special Judge’s Court with fresh applications in the vigilance cases. Reports in June said the court was considering the renewed pleas after the earlier rejection.
Why Zubeen Garg PSOs came under scrutiny
The financial investigation began during the wider probe into the death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore in September 2025. Investigators found substantial transactions in the bank accounts of Bora and Baishya, prompting a separate vigilance inquiry into their financial affairs.
According to a February report, the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell had registered disproportionate-assets cases against the two officers. The report said investigators had identified transactions of more than Rs 1 crore through their accounts.
However, the existence of unusual transactions does not by itself establish criminal liability. The allegations remain subject to judicial scrutiny and the accused are entitled to due process.
Separate vigilance cases filed
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption later filed separate chargesheets against the two former PSOs. According to a February 27 report, the chargesheet against Nandeswar Bora was filed as Chargesheet No. 03/2026, while the case against Paresh Baishya was submitted as Chargesheet No. 04/2026.
The cases relate specifically to alleged possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income. They are separate from the criminal case connected with Zubeen Garg’s death.
Earlier bail pleas were rejected
The Zubeen Garg PSOs had also faced bail proceedings in the separate death case. In January, the Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court rejected their bail applications along with the plea filed by singer Amritprava Mahanta.
In that case, the two PSOs face charges including criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust linked to alleged misappropriation of funds or property entrusted to them. Those allegations are separate from the disproportionate-assets proceedings before the Special Court.
The distinction is important because the two sets of proceedings involve different allegations and legal questions.
Special Court considers fresh applications
In June, the Special Court was scheduled to hear the fresh bail applications filed by Bora and Baishya in the disproportionate-assets cases. Their earlier requests had been rejected by the special fast-track court, after which they approached the Special Judge’s Court.
The hearing was subsequently deferred, with a July 23 date reported for the next proceedings. The available reports reviewed for this article do not independently establish a later order granting bail in the assets cases.
Meanwhile, the vigilance proceedings continue alongside the broader legal cases connected with the late singer.
Legal process remains under scrutiny
The Zubeen Garg PSOs remain at the centre of separate investigations involving financial transactions and allegations concerning their conduct. At the same time, courts must determine the allegations on the basis of evidence placed before them.
The vigilance chargesheets have moved the disproportionate-assets matters into the judicial stage. Therefore, any finding of guilt will depend on the evidence and the outcome of the court proceedings.
Overall, the bail proceedings and the assets cases remain part of a wider legal process following Zubeen Garg’s death. Further court orders will clarify the status of the two former PSOs and determine how the disproportionate-assets cases proceed.
