The Cardiology Department of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital achieved a major medical breakthrough by saving a critically ill patient suffering from severe arterial blockage in both legs. As a result of timely and advanced treatment, the 56-year-old resident of Sonamura can now walk normally again.
Six Months of Increasing Pain
For nearly six months, the patient struggled with intense pain in both legs. The discomfort grew worse at night, and it repeatedly disturbed his sleep. Eventually, during the last month, his condition deteriorated further as blood circulation in both legs stopped completely, putting him at extreme risk.

Critical Diagnosis at GBP Hospital
Once admitted to GBP Hospital under Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Rakesh Das, the patient underwent an angiography on November 17, 2025. The test clearly revealed a severe condition. The arteries in both legs had dried up due to Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) or Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD). Moreover, doctors found the right leg artery 100 percent blocked, starting from its origin up to the knee.
Immediate and Life-Saving Treatment
Considering the seriousness of the case, Dr. Das recommended immediate intervention. Consequently, on December 2, 2025, the medical team performed a minimally invasive procedure to implant a stent in the blocked artery. Since the technique required no surgical incision, the patient experienced a faster and safer recovery.
Soon after the procedure, blood circulation returned to the leg. Gradually, the patient regained his ability to walk without pain, marking a significant turnaround in his condition.
Free Treatment Under Ayushman Bharat
The entire treatment came free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. According to hospital officials, a private hospital would charge nearly ₹3 lakh for the same procedure. The patient walked out of the hospital on December 4, 2025, relieved and grateful.
Dedicated Medical Team Behind the Success
A skilled and coordinated team worked together to ensure the patient’s recovery. The team included:
- Dr. Rakesh Das – Consultant Cardiologist
- Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi – Associate Professor and Head of Department
- Dr. Manna Bhattacharjee – Cardiologist
- Junior doctors: Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anvesha Debnath, Dr. Prantik Roy
- Cath Lab Technician: Sanjay Ghosh
- Cath Lab Nurses: Debabrata Debnath, Prankrishna Deb, Manas Dutta, Titiksha Majumdar
- Echo Technician: Kishan Roy
Their teamwork and timely decisions played a key role in the successful outcome.
Family Expresses Heartfelt Gratitude
The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude to the doctors and medical staff. They emphasized that they received world-class treatment within Tripura itself, eliminating the need to travel outside the state for advanced cardiac care. Furthermore, they praised the hospital for providing such critical treatment free of cost under a government scheme.
Through this successful intervention, AGMC and GBP Hospital once again demonstrated their expertise in handling complex cardiac cases and reinforced public confidence in the state’s healthcare system.
