The Bharatiya Janata Party Legislature Party in Assam will meet on May 10 to elect its new leader following the NDA’s emphatic victory in the Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on May 8.
Addressing the media, Sarma said the swearing-in ceremony of the new government will take place on May 12 at 11 AM in the presence of Narendra Modi.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a massive mandate in the Assembly elections and returned to power for a third consecutive term in Assam. Political observers believe the result further strengthened the BJP’s dominance in the Northeast.

BJP Legislature Party Meeting On May 10
Himanta Biswa Sarma said the BJP Legislature Party meeting would take place in the presence of senior central leaders and observers appointed by the party leadership.
According to Sarma, J. P. Nadda will attend the meeting as the central observer. Nayab Singh Saini has also been appointed as co-observer for the process.
The meeting will formally elect the BJP Legislature Party leader, who will then become the NDA’s chief ministerial choice for Assam.
Political analysts expect the process to proceed smoothly because the NDA secured a comfortable majority in the Assembly elections.
The meeting carries major political significance as it will formally determine the leadership of the next Assam government.
NDA Allies To Ratify Decision
Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that after the BJP elects its legislature party leader, NDA allies will formally ratify the decision.
The alliance partners include the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad.
According to Sarma, the elected leader will then stake claim to form the government before Lakshman Prasad Acharya.
Political observers say the NDA’s coordinated alliance structure played a key role in its electoral success in Assam.
The BJP leadership has consistently maintained strong partnerships with regional allies in the state.
Experts believe the alliance strategy helped the NDA strengthen its political presence across multiple regions of Assam.
Swearing-In Ceremony On May 12
The swearing-in ceremony of the new Assam government will take place on May 12 at 11 AM at Veterinary Field in Khanapara.
Officials expect a large gathering during the event because several chief ministers, Union ministers, political leaders, and industry representatives are likely to attend.
Security arrangements have already intensified ahead of the high-profile ceremony.
Political analysts believe the event will showcase the BJP’s political strength in the Northeast after securing another decisive electoral victory.
The presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to make the ceremony one of the biggest political events in Assam this year.
Party workers across the state have already begun preparations to celebrate the NDA’s return to power.
Himanta Biswa Sarma Submitted Resignation
Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya after the election results.
However, the Governor requested him to continue as caretaker chief minister until the formation of the new government.
Political experts say such formal procedures remain standard after the completion of Assembly elections and before the swearing-in of a new administration.
Sarma has remained one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in the Northeast over the past several years.
Under his leadership, the BJP strengthened its political base significantly across Assam.
Observers believe his administrative style and political strategy contributed heavily to the NDA’s electoral success.
NDA Registers Massive Electoral Victory
The BJP-led NDA secured a third consecutive term in Assam after winning 102 out of the state’s 126 Assembly seats.
The BJP alone won 82 seats, while its alliance partners, the BPF and AGP, secured 10 seats each.
Political analysts described the result as a major endorsement of the NDA government’s governance and political strategy.
The alliance managed to maintain strong support across urban, rural, tribal, and upper Assam regions during the elections.
Experts believe welfare schemes, infrastructure development, and organisational strength played important roles in the NDA’s victory.
The result also reinforced Assam’s importance within the BJP’s broader Northeast political strategy.
BJP Strengthens Hold In Northeast
The Assam election result once again demonstrated the BJP’s growing dominance in northeastern India.
Over the years, the party expanded rapidly across the region through alliance-building, organisational growth, and welfare-focused campaigns.
Political observers say Assam remains strategically important because it serves as the political gateway to the Northeast.
The BJP leadership has consistently highlighted infrastructure projects, connectivity improvements, and investment initiatives in Assam.
Experts believe the party’s continued success in Assam strengthens its influence across neighbouring northeastern states as well.
The NDA’s third consecutive term therefore carries both regional and national political significance.
Focus Likely To Remain On Development
Following the election victory, BJP leaders reiterated their focus on governance, infrastructure, and economic development in Assam.
The government is expected to continue work on projects related to roads, bridges, healthcare, education, and industrial investment.
Political analysts believe employment generation and economic growth will remain key priorities for the new administration.
The BJP has also consistently focused on connectivity projects aimed at improving links between Assam and other northeastern states.
Observers expect the next government to continue emphasising regional integration and development initiatives.
The leadership transition process within the legislature party will therefore play an important role in shaping the administration’s future agenda.
Political Significance Of Third Consecutive Term
Winning a third consecutive term represents a major political achievement for the NDA in Assam.
For decades, Assam politics witnessed frequent political shifts and coalition changes. However, the BJP-led alliance managed to establish a stable political base in the state.
Political experts believe the alliance successfully expanded its support among diverse social and regional groups.
The NDA also benefited from strong organisational coordination between the BJP and its regional allies.
Observers say the result may influence political strategies in other northeastern states ahead of future elections.
Attention Now On Leadership Selection
With the legislature party meeting scheduled for May 10, political attention has now shifted toward the formal selection of the next chief minister.
Although Himanta Biswa Sarma remains the dominant political figure within the Assam BJP, the meeting will officially complete the leadership process.
Party workers and supporters across the state continue celebrating the NDA’s landslide victory.
The swearing-in ceremony on May 12 will mark the beginning of another BJP-led government in Assam under the NDA alliance.
As the political process moves forward, the focus will remain on governance priorities, cabinet formation, and the future direction of Assam’s development agenda under the new administration.
