Kuki Inpi Manipur has condemned the detention of Kuki villagers in Kangpokpi district and alleged that security forces used excessive force during protests. Kuki Inpi Manipur has objected to the arrests following an overnight attack in Chawangkining, a Liangmai Naga village in Kangpokpi. Reports said security forces detained Kuki men after two houses were burned and firing was reported in the area.
Available reports differ on the number detained. One report described seven Kuki men being detained, while another account listed six men by name. The men were reportedly taken into custody by the CRPF’s CoBRA unit.
The security operation came after a series of killings in neighbouring areas. Kuki organisations have alleged that armed groups linked to Naga outfits were involved in some recent attacks on Kuki-Zo civilians. However, those allegations have not been established by a public judicial finding.
Kuki Inpi Manipur alleges force against protesters
The arrests triggered protests in Kangpokpi and nearby areas. Residents, including women and village volunteers, reportedly gathered and blocked National Highway 2 as anger over the detention grew.
Reports said protesters confronted security personnel, with allegations of stone-pelting and tyre burning. Security forces reportedly opened fire during the confrontation. No immediate casualties were reported in the accounts reviewed.

Kangpokpi remains one of the districts most affected by the continuing security crisis in Manipur. Recent incidents have involved attacks on villages, civilian deaths, arrests and confrontations between residents and security personnel.
For now, the focus is on establishing what happened at Chawangkining, how many people were detained, why they were detained and whether force was used according to established procedures. A clear account from the authorities would help separate verified facts from competing claims.
Meanwhile, the release of the detained men, as reported, has eased the immediate confrontation but has not resolved the questions raised by Kuki Inpi Manipur and protesters. Further investigation will be important to determine responsibility for the violence and assess the conduct of all sides.
