Meghalaya CM Slams ‘Racial Bullying’

Conrad K. Sangma on Monday strongly condemned the physical assault on two girls from the Northeast near Saket Court, calling the incident an example of “racial bullying” that must not be tolerated.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Minister expressed anger over repeated attacks on people from the Northeast living in mainland India. He urged authorities to take strict action against those responsible.

In a post on X, Sangma said such incidents were unacceptable and demanded stronger measures to prevent racial discrimination.

“Angered by the repeated attacks on North East people in Mainland India. The physical attack on two of our people from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi, is sickening. Racial bullying should not be accepted as the new normal, and we must act against it,” he wrote.

Assault Took Place in Park Near Saket Court

According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday evening in a park located near Saket Court in New Delhi. The two girls were reportedly walking with friends when a group of men began making inappropriate remarks.

When one of the girls objected to the comments, an argument broke out. The situation soon escalated, and the men allegedly attacked the victims physically.

The assault left one of the girls injured.

Victim Receives Treatment at Safdarjung Hospital

Following the attack, authorities took the injured victim to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment. Doctors conducted a preliminary examination and confirmed that the victim had suffered minor injuries.

Sources said the medical team provided necessary treatment, and the victim is currently stable.

Delhi Police Launch Investigation

Delhi Police have contacted the victims and started an investigation into the incident. Officers are collecting statements and examining evidence to identify the individuals involved in the assault.

Police officials said further action will follow based on the findings of the investigation.

Earlier Incident of Racial Abuse Reported

The latest case comes weeks after another incident involving racial abuse against women from the Northeast in Delhi.

On February 20, three women from Arunachal Pradesh reported racial abuse and criminal intimidation in the Malviya Nagar area of the city.

Police arrested the accused in that case and later sent them to 14-day judicial custody.

Authorities also invoked provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act during the investigation. An Assistant Commissioner of Police supervised the probe under the guidance of senior officials.

Growing Concern Over Safety of Northeast Residents

The recent incidents have raised concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast living in major metropolitan cities.

Leaders and civil society groups have repeatedly called for stronger action against racial discrimination and harassment. They have also urged authorities to ensure better protection and awareness to prevent such incidents in the future.

Sangma’s strong condemnation reflects growing demand for accountability and strict enforcement of laws to stop racial bullying and ensure the safety and dignity of people from the Northeast across the country.
