Tripura Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury Promises Swift Distribution of Pending Atta to Ration Card Holders

Earlier this month, Nirmal Biswas, an MLA from the Opposition CPM, wrote to Chowdhury that card holders in Khowai received maida and semolina but not atta during Durga Puja

Tripura’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury, has assured ration card holders across the state that pending atta (wheat flour) dues will be distributed promptly. Addressing public concerns regarding delays in the supply of subsidized atta, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for all eligible beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

The announcement comes amidst growing public criticism over logistical challenges and delayed distributions, which have caused hardship for many families relying on subsidized food grains for their daily needs.

Acknowledging the Issue

In his statement, Minister Chowdhury acknowledged the delays and emphasized that the government is actively working to resolve them. “We understand the inconvenience caused to our ration card holders due to the delay in atta distribution. I want to assure everyone that the government is taking all necessary steps to address the issue and ensure the dues are cleared at the earliest,” he said.

He further explained that logistical bottlenecks, including the procurement and transportation of wheat from central warehouses to local ration shops, were among the primary reasons for the delay. However, the minister assured that these challenges are being addressed in coordination with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and other stakeholders.

Efforts to Streamline Distribution

To expedite the delivery process, the Tripura government has initiated several measures aimed at streamlining the distribution of atta and other essential commodities under the PDS. Minister Chowdhury revealed that additional storage facilities and vehicles have been deployed to ensure the smooth movement of food grains from warehouses to ration shops.

The government is also focusing on enhancing transparency and efficiency in the distribution system by leveraging digital tools. “We are working on ensuring real-time monitoring of stock levels and deliveries through digital platforms. This will help us address gaps more effectively,” Chowdhury stated.

Engagement with Central Authorities

Minister Chowdhury highlighted that the state government is in regular communication with the central authorities to secure an uninterrupted supply of wheat and other essential grains for distribution under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

Tripura receives its allotment of wheat and rice from central stocks, which are distributed to eligible beneficiaries at subsidized rates through fair price shops. Any disruption in the supply chain at the national level can impact the state’s ability to distribute food grains on time, making coordination with the central government a critical aspect of the process.

Relief for Beneficiaries

The minister’s assurances have brought some relief to ration card holders, particularly those from economically weaker sections who depend heavily on subsidized food grains. “We rely on the ration system for our daily needs, especially wheat flour. The delay has caused a lot of trouble, but it’s good to hear that the government is taking action,” said a resident from Agartala.

As per the government’s latest update, the pending atta dues will be distributed in phases to ensure that all ration card holders receive their entitlements without further delays. Chowdhury also urged beneficiaries to remain patient as the distribution process is carried out.

Opposition Criticism

Despite the government’s assurances, opposition parties in Tripura have criticized the delays, blaming them on administrative inefficiency. They have accused the state government of failing to prioritize the needs of the people, particularly at a time when food security is a pressing issue for many families.

“The delay in ration distribution reflects poor planning and mismanagement. The government must take responsibility for the hardships faced by the people,” said a spokesperson from the opposition party.

Government’s Broader Initiatives

In addition to addressing the immediate issue of atta distribution, the Tripura government has announced plans to improve the overall functioning of the PDS. Minister Chowdhury emphasized the importance of ensuring that no family is left behind in receiving their rightful entitlements.

“We are committed to strengthening the PDS system in Tripura. This includes not only ensuring timely distribution but also increasing awareness about beneficiaries’ rights and addressing grievances more efficiently,” the minister noted.

Looking Ahead

The timely distribution of atta dues will be a test of the government’s ability to resolve logistical challenges and regain public trust. With Minister Chowdhury’s assurances, ration card holders are hopeful that the pending supplies will be delivered without further delays.

The state government’s focus on improving transparency, efficiency, and coordination within the PDS system could serve as a long-term solution to prevent such issues in the future. For now, all eyes are on the Food and Civil Supplies Department as they work to deliver on their promise to ensure food security for the people of Tripura.
