Key Facts

Assembly Discussion on Water Supply

The Chief Minister shared the update during the budget session in the Assembly. He responded to concerns raised by Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy.

Roy highlighted irregular water supply in several parts of Agartala. He also claimed that no new treatment plants were added after earlier projects at College Tilla and Bardowali.

However, Dr. Saha clarified that the government has already taken steps. Two new water treatment plants are under construction at Master Para and College Tilla. Therefore, capacity is expected to improve soon.

Impact of Ongoing Infrastructure Work

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister acknowledged temporary disruptions in water supply. He said projects under Agartala Smart City Limited have affected distribution in some areas.

Construction of covered drains and underground electricity lines caused these issues. However, line departments remain on standby. They are working to fix problems quickly and reduce inconvenience.

Focus on Water Quality

In addition to supply, the government is also focusing on water quality. Dr. Saha pointed out that poor maintenance at the household level can affect drinking water.

To address this, a “Clean Your Tank” campaign is underway. Members of AMRUT Self Help Groups are leading the effort. As a result, residents are becoming more aware of hygiene and safe storage.

Existing Water Infrastructure

The Chief Minister provided details of Agartala’s water system. The DWS Division-I, along with four sub-divisions, manages supply in the city.

The infrastructure includes 13 surface water treatment plants that draw water from the Howrah River. It also has 31 modified iron removal plants and six packaged iron removal plants. In addition, 77 deep tube wells support groundwater supply.

At present, 25% of water comes from surface sources. The remaining 75% depends on groundwater. However, extraction remains well within safe limits.

Meeting Growing Demand

Agartala’s population has reached 5,79,418. According to AMRUT guidelines, each person requires 135 litres per day. Therefore, the total demand stands at 78.22 million litres daily.

The Chief Minister said the government is working to meet this demand. New infrastructure and better management will help ensure a steady supply.

Why Agartala’s Water Management Matters

Agartala is the capital of Tripura and a key urban center in Northeast India. Reliable water supply is essential for public health and urban growth. Therefore, efficient management of groundwater and infrastructure is crucial for the city’s future.
