Livestock Sector Supports Rural Livelihoods

Speaking at the national conclave titled “Livestock, Livelihoods and Women’s Economic Agency: Targeting the Most Vulnerable,” Das said livestock activities are playing an increasingly important role in strengthening Tripura’s rural economy.

He said agriculture and allied activities make a significant contribution to rural livelihoods in India. Livestock farming provides families with an additional source of income and can create opportunities for self-employment.

According to the minister, several livestock activities have expanded in Tripura in recent years. Poultry farming, piggery, duck rearing and cattle farming are helping unemployed young men and women develop independent sources of income.

National Livestock Mission Helping Youth

He said the scheme has helped unemployed youth establish businesses related to livestock and develop sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The minister also thanked the Central government for supporting programmes aimed at strengthening the livestock sector and generating employment in rural areas.

Focus on Women’s Economic Empowerment

The minister described livestock development as an important pathway for women’s economic empowerment, particularly among vulnerable communities.

He said livestock-based enterprises can provide women with income-generating opportunities while also supporting household livelihoods and rural development.

The focus on women is particularly important because small-scale livestock activities can be developed at the community and household levels with appropriate technical and institutional support.

National Conclave Brings Stakeholders Together

The national conclave provided an opportunity for veterinary professionals, Mobile Veterinary Officers (MVOs), Pashu Sakhis associated with the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) and women involved in livestock activities to exchange knowledge.

Das said the event would help participants learn new approaches and understand better practices for developing livestock-based enterprises.

He expressed hope that participants would apply the knowledge gained at the conclave to improve their activities and contribute further to Tripura’s rural economy.

Officials Attend the Event

ARDD Secretary S Prabhu and Director Niraj Kumar Chanchal were also present at the event.

The participation of departmental officials and field-level stakeholders highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to strengthen livestock-based livelihoods across the state.
