Tripura: Pradyot Debbarma Urges Centre to Implement Tiprasa Accord After TTAADC Poll Win

Agartala, Tripura: Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on October 6 urged the Centre to honour its commitment to Tripura’s indigenous people and start implementing the Tiprasa accord. His statement came after TMP recorded a major victory in the TTAADC Village Committee elections. The party won 3,428 seats out of 4,594, according to official figures. Meanwhile, the BJP won 859 seats and its ally IPFT secured 33 seats. Debbarma said the election victory should now lead to action on the 2024 Tiprasa accord.

Key Facts

Debbarma Urges Centre to Act on Tiprasa Accord

Following the election results, Debbarma thanked voters for supporting the TMP. He said the elections would restore elected village bodies across the tribal council areas after a long gap.

Moreover, the TMP chief highlighted his efforts to ensure that authorities held the elections. He first approached the Tripura High Court and later moved the Supreme Court over the issue.

The Supreme Court then directed the State Election Commission to conduct the polls. As a result, Tripura held the Village Committee elections after nearly a decade.

Now, Debbarma wants the Centre to shift its attention towards the Tiprasa accord. The Centre, the Tripura government and TMP signed the agreement in March 2024.

The accord seeks to address development concerns and other issues affecting Tripura’s indigenous population. Therefore, Debbarma said the government should now move from assurances to implementation.

Amit Shah’s Assurance

Debbarma also referred to a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. According to the TMP chief, Shah assured him that the Centre would begin implementing the accord after Durga Puja.

He also said Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha would remain present during the process.

“We hope the Centre to honour the commitment given to the people of tribal areas,” Debbarma said.

Meanwhile, Debbarma stressed that indigenous people had waited for years for the agreement to move forward. He warned that continued delays could affect his ability to seek their support during the 2028 Assembly elections.

TMP Highlights Indigenous Land Rights

Debbarma also addressed concerns over Tripura’s different communities. He said the TMP does not oppose any community living in the state.

Instead, he called for communal harmony and equal respect for all communities. At the same time, he demanded protection for the legitimate rights of indigenous people.

In particular, Debbarma highlighted land rights in the TTAADC areas. He pointed to safeguards available in other Sixth Schedule areas of Northeast India.

According to him, similar protection should strengthen the rights of indigenous communities in Tripura’s tribal council areas.

TMP Wins Major Share of Village Committee Seats

The Village Committee election results gave TMP a significant political advantage across the TTAADC region.

Official figures show that TMP won 3,428 of the 4,594 seats. In comparison, the BJP secured 859 seats, while IPFT won 33.

The results could further strengthen TMP’s position in Tripura’s tribal politics. Furthermore, the outcome may influence the political strategies of major parties ahead of future elections.

The elections also restored elected village-level bodies after a prolonged gap. Therefore, the new committees could play an important role in local administration across the TTAADC areas.

Focus Shifts to 2028 Assembly Elections

With the Village Committee elections complete, TMP can now focus on the implementation of the Tiprasa accord and its wider political strategy.

Debbarma’s remarks also bring the 2028 Assembly elections into focus. The implementation of the accord could become an important political issue among indigenous voters in the coming years.
