Agartala, Tripura: Restoration work on Tripura’s Gomati hydroelectric project in Gomati district is scheduled to begin in December 2026, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on October 9. The state government has earmarked around ₹100 crore for the project, which has remained closed since devastating floods damaged the facility in 2024.
The government plans to revive the long-shuttered power plant following technical assessments by several leading institutions. According to the minister, the restored facility is expected to generate 10–11 MW of power. The project’s revival is also expected to renew attention on dam safety and water infrastructure in Tripura.

Tripura Government Plans Gomati Project Revival
The Tripura government has decided to restore the Gomati hydroelectric project after extensive damage forced it to shut down in 2024. The facility is the state’s only hydroelectric power project.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the planned restoration while addressing a dam safety awareness programme at Tirthamuk in Gomati district on October 9.
The government has allocated an estimated ₹100 crore for the work. According to Nath, restoration activities will begin in December 2026.
Technical Surveys Assess Restoration Feasibility
Before taking the decision, the government commissioned technical studies to determine whether the damaged facility could be revived.
The institutions involved included the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala; the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati; the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC); and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
These assessments helped the government examine the feasibility of restoring the project. However, further implementation details and the expected completion date were not specified in the announcement.
Project Expected to Generate 10–11 MW
According to Nath, the restored Gomati hydroelectric project is expected to produce 10–11 MW of power. This figure is significantly higher than its original installed capacity of 2.5 MW.
The proposed increase could make the revived facility a more significant contributor to Tripura’s power infrastructure. However, the expected generation will depend on the restoration work and the plant’s operating conditions.
The project has remained non-operational since the 2024 floods. Therefore, its revival marks an important step towards restoring the state’s hydropower infrastructure.
Dam Safety Remains a Key Priority
During the programme, Nath praised the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) for organising the awareness initiative. He said such programmes highlight the importance of protecting people who live downstream of dams.
Dam safety remains particularly important for communities living near reservoirs and water infrastructure. Regular assessments, awareness programmes and appropriate maintenance can help reduce risks and improve preparedness.
History of the Gomati Hydroelectric Project
The Gomati hydroelectric project was established at Tirthamuk around 56 years ago. It harnesses water from the Raima and Sarma hill streams to generate electricity.
Over time, the dam and its reservoir have also become tourist attractions in Tripura. The restoration plan could therefore have significance beyond power generation, although the government has not announced any specific tourism-related measures.
What Is the Gomati Hydroelectric Project Restoration Cost?
The Tripura government has earmarked approximately ₹100 crore for restoring the Gomati hydroelectric project.
When Will Restoration Work Begin?
According to Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, restoration work is scheduled to begin in December 2026.
How Much Power Will the Restored Project Generate?
The minister said the revived facility is expected to generate 10–11 MW of power, compared with its original installed capacity of 2.5 MW.
Importance for Tripura and Northeast India
The revival of the Gomati hydroelectric project could strengthen Tripura’s power infrastructure and restore a long-idle hydropower facility. The project also highlights the importance of resilient energy systems and dam safety across Northeast India, where water resources play a significant role in infrastructure planning.
