In a major boost for indigenous farmers in Tripura, the traditional aromatic rice variety Kali Khasa has entered the national market with institutional support from the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).
Farmers from the Amarpur subdivision recently supplied one metric tonne of Kali Khasa rice directly to Sublime Gourmet Pvt. Ltd., a private firm based in Delhi. The development marks a significant milestone in connecting local cultivators to premium buyers across India.

Direct Market Link for Women Farmers
The rice consignment came from women cultivators in villages near the Kalajhari hills. Officials handed over the produce at the Amarpur RD Block office in the presence of Block Development Officer Utpal Das, who helped coordinate the initiative.
Authorities highlighted that the direct procurement model eliminates middlemen. As a result, farmers receive fair prices for their produce and retain a larger share of profits. This system also builds confidence among small and marginal cultivators who often struggle to access wider markets.
TRLM officials said the initiative aligns with the mission’s goal of strengthening rural livelihoods through market linkages and capacity building.
A Heritage Rice with Premium Appeal
Kali Khasa holds cultural and agricultural significance in Tripura. Indigenous communities have cultivated the aromatic variety for generations. The rice is known for its distinctive fragrance, unique taste, and traditional value.
With rising demand for organic and specialty rice varieties across India, Kali Khasa has begun attracting attention beyond the state. Consumers in metropolitan cities increasingly seek premium, region-specific products with authentic origins.
Officials believe branding and proper marketing can position Kali Khasa as a niche product in India’s growing organic food market.
Strengthening Rural Livelihoods
The successful transaction has encouraged farmers in Amarpur and surrounding areas. Local authorities expect that consistent market demand will motivate more cultivators to grow Kali Khasa on a larger scale.
By linking producers directly with buyers, TRLM aims to create sustainable income streams for rural households. Women self-help groups have played a crucial role in aggregating produce and maintaining quality standards.
Officials noted that such initiatives help reduce rural distress and promote economic independence among indigenous communities.
Expanding Opportunities Ahead
The recent supply to Sublime Gourmet Pvt. Ltd. represents the beginning of broader opportunities. Authorities are exploring possibilities for larger consignments and long-term agreements with national buyers.
If demand continues to grow, Kali Khasa rice could eventually tap into export markets as well. Experts suggest that proper packaging, certification, and branding will be essential for scaling up.
Local administrators believe this breakthrough showcases Tripura’s agricultural diversity and untapped potential. They see Kali Khasa as a flagship product that can elevate the state’s profile in the premium rice segment.
As market linkages strengthen, indigenous farmers in Tripura stand to benefit from improved incomes and greater recognition. The initiative not only supports economic growth but also preserves a traditional crop deeply rooted in the region’s heritage.
