Unakoti district in Tripura witnessed a violent outbreak on Saturday after clashes erupted in the Saydarpur–Shimultala area under Fatikroy. A group of armed miscreants allegedly carried out coordinated attacks, creating panic among residents and disrupting normal life.

From early morning, attackers set houses, shops, and vehicles on fire. They vandalised properties and assaulted locals, turning the area into a scene of chaos. Residents described the situation as terrifying and unprecedented.

Houses, Shops, Vehicles Set Ablaze

Local sources said the attackers targeted both residential and commercial properties. A timber shop was completely destroyed in the fire. Several houses and haystacks were also torched. Miscreants damaged multiple vehicles during the violence.

The sudden escalation forced many families to flee their homes. Several innocent residents suffered injuries during the clashes. The damage caused heavy losses and left the locality gripped by fear.

Heavy Security Deployment to Control Situation

As tensions escalated, police rushed large security forces to the area. Teams from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Rifles took charge of the situation. The forces cordoned off sensitive zones to prevent further violence.

Police used mild baton charges to disperse unruly groups. Authorities also deployed drones to monitor movement and track potential troublemakers. The visible security presence helped restore partial calm.

Administration Imposes Curfew and Internet Ban

Unakoti District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumdar and Acting Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai visited the affected area to assess the situation. After reviewing ground conditions, the administration imposed Section 163 and enforced curfew restrictions in the region.

To stop the spread of rumours, officials suspended mobile internet services across Unakoti district for 48 hours. Authorities said the step would help maintain public order and prevent misinformation.

Police Arrest Ten Accused

Acting SP Avinash Rai confirmed that police had arrested ten people in connection with the violence. “A group of miscreants deliberately entered the area and set fire to properties. Security forces responded immediately. We have brought the situation under control,” he said.

Police teams continue to conduct raids to identify others involved. Officials assured strict legal action against all perpetrators.

Puja Donation Dispute Triggered Violence

Local sources revealed that the violence began over a dispute related to Puja donations. The incident reportedly started when a driver refused to pay a demanded contribution. An argument followed and soon escalated into physical assault and arson.

The clash quickly spread as more people joined in, leading to widespread destruction. Authorities said they were investigating the matter thoroughly.

Authorities Warn Against Rumours and Communal Angle

Although the situation has stabilised, tension remains in the area. Police patrols continue round the clock. Officials urged residents to maintain calm and cooperate with law enforcement.

The administration warned against attempts to give the incident a communal or political colour. “Any effort to disturb peace or spread false information will face strict action,” officials stated.

Call for Strong Action Against Lawlessness

The Fatikroy violence has raised serious concerns about extortion in the name of religious donations. Residents and civil society groups have demanded firm action against those responsible.

Authorities said they would take all necessary steps to restore peace and ensure such incidents do not recur.
