Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied the Home Minister during the visit. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora, and several senior state leaders were also present.

Memorial Honours 860 Martyrs

The Swahid Smarak Kshetra, inaugurated earlier this month, commemorates 860 people who lost their lives during the Assam Agitation. The mass movement began in 1979 and concluded with the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985.

An eternal flame continues to burn at the memorial as a symbol of remembrance and sacrifice.

Martyrs’ Gallery and Historic Legacy

The memorial complex features a dedicated martyrs’ gallery with busts of individuals killed during the agitation. Among them is Khargeswar Talukdar, recognised as the first martyr of the movement. He died on December 10, 1979.

The gallery serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens who participated in the struggle.

Prime Minister’s Earlier Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also visited the memorial earlier this month during his two-day tour of Assam. His visit underscored the national importance of the Assam Agitation and the Assam Accord.

World-Class Memorial Complex

The Assam government built the memorial complex at a cost of ₹170 crore. The site includes landscaped water bodies, a modern auditorium, and a prayer hall.

It also features a bicycle track and facilities for a sound-and-light show. The show narrates key phases of the Assam Agitation and highlights major chapters of the state’s history.

Officials said the complex aims to educate younger generations about the movement while preserving the legacy of those who fought for Assam’s identity.
