The Assam government has approved a ₹30 increase in the daily wages of tea plantation workers across the state. The revised wage will come into effect from April 1, 2026, according to an official notification issued on March 7.
The wage hike will benefit workers employed in both estate tea gardens and small tea gardens. Assam remains one of India’s largest tea-producing states, and thousands of workers depend on the tea industry for their livelihood.

Decision Based on Advisory Board Recommendation
The state government approved the increase following a recommendation from the Minimum Wages Advisory Board. The board discussed the proposal during a meeting held on February 26.
After reviewing the recommendation, the government issued a notification confirming the interim wage hike. The order stated that the Governor of Assam had sanctioned the increase.
Officials said the decision aims to improve the earnings of tea plantation workers and address long-standing wage concerns in the sector.
Implementation From April 1
The revised wage structure will be implemented across tea plantations in the state from April 1, 2026. Both large estate tea gardens and smaller tea gardens must follow the new wage rate.
Authorities expect the increase to provide financial relief to thousands of workers employed in Assam’s tea industry.
Tea plantation workers form a significant part of the workforce in the state. Many families in rural areas depend on daily wages earned from tea gardens.
Importance of the Tea Industry in Assam
Assam plays a crucial role in India’s tea production. The state produces a large share of the country’s total tea output and exports tea to many international markets.
Tea plantations across districts such as Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, and Sonitpur employ a large number of workers. The sector also supports several related industries, including transportation, packaging, and trade.
Because of the industry’s importance, wage revisions and labour policies often attract attention from both workers’ unions and tea garden management.
Support for Tea Garden Workers
The latest wage increase reflects the government’s effort to address the needs of workers in the tea sector. Labour organisations have often demanded better wages and improved living conditions for tea garden workers.
Officials said the revised wage will help improve workers’ income and support their families.
With the new wage set to take effect in April, tea plantations across Assam will soon implement the revised pay structure for their workforce.
