Guwahati, Sept 2, 2025, The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Asad Madani of operating as a “sleeper cell of Congress” within a high-level political conspiracy allegedly hatched during a Delhi dinner on July 23.
Assam BJP spokesperson Pijush Kanti Saha claimed that the meeting sowed the seeds of a coordinated effort to destabilize Assam. He further alleged that a communal and political strategy was devised to unsettle law and order. Moreover, leveraging religious identities and leveraging cross-border tensions.
Saha demanded immediate investigation, asserting that the Congress party is behind the plot, using Madani and his religious influence as proxies.
Spokesperson Highlights Serious Allegations
Saha suggested that senior leaders from Congress and Jamiat participated in the July 23 dinner. Reports of a recorded conversation, he said, reveal plans to instigate unrest ahead of critical state and national elections.
“This is not just political scheming,” Saha maintained. “It is an evil plan to misuse religion and threaten Assam’s peace. Furthermore, we demand a probe by CBI or NIA so the country can know the truth.”
He warned that ignoring such claims could exacerbate mistrust and ignite tensions across the state’s diverse communities.
Historical Context: Madani’s Political Position
Asad Madani, a veteran figure in Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, is known for his religious and social influence. Further, the BJP’s charge of him being a “sleeper cell” stems from his long-standing commitment to secularism and interfaith dialogue.
Assam BJP asserts that those ideals are being misused in contemporary politics. However, they cited instances where Madani’s statements were interpreted as backing rival political parties and divisive narratives.
“While he projects secular credentials,” said Saha, “we believe his actions are building bridges for Congress to infiltrate communities and drive unrest.”
Opposition Pushback and Demands for Proof
The state’s political opposition, including Congress and left-leaning groups, have dismissed the BJP’s allegations as baseless and inflammatory. Moreover, they argue that the BJP is stoking communal fears for electoral gain.
A senior Congress leader told reporters, “Spinning such conspiracy narratives without evidence is a tactic to divert attention from governance failures.”
Meanwhile, secular activists and minority rights groups expressed concern, urging the BJP to substantiate its claims or withdraw them. Legal professionals warned that wrongful accusations against religious figures could fuel communal polarization.
Calls for Investigation Grow Volume
In response to escalating tensions, several local MLAs and civic groups have called for a court-monitored inquiry to investigate the alleged conspiracy. The Assam Bar Council urged the Chief Minister and Home Department to seek clarity from the central government.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have been mentioned as possible agencies to lead the probe. However, the BJP insists only a central-level investigation will ensure credibility and due process.
Political Strategy at Play Ahead of Elections
Assam is entering a politically charged period with Assembly elections nearing in 2026. Also, analysts see the BJP’s accusations as a strategic move to consolidate its support base by painting rivals as destabilizing forces.
“This is clearly an election season tactic,” said a political analyst from Assam School of Political Studies. “By labeling a religious leader as a proxy for Congress, the BJP is trying to blur lines between political opposition and anti-national forces.”
The opposition, in turn, counters that the BJP is exploiting fear to derail democratic debates and stall legitimate dissent.
What Citizens Should Watch Next
- Will the Assam government sanction a formal investigation into the alleged Delhi conspiracy?
- Will Asad Madani respond publicly or file legal challenges for defamation?
- Will overarching institutions such as the NIA or CBI step in to probe cross-border terror links or political destabilization efforts?
- How might this narrative shape community dialogues and calls for harmony or distrust in Assam?
Call for Calm and Judicial Responsibility
Civic leaders have urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and not fall prey to political misinformation. Although, they encouraged restraint from media and politicians until facts emerge.
“In a diverse state like Assam, such explosive claims must be handled with utmost care,” said a civil society leader. “We must protect both democratic space and social harmony.”
