The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam has officially announced the names of its newly appointed office-bearers for the state committee. This strategic move aims to boost the party’s grassroots presence, streamline election preparations, and reinforce development-focused outreach.

The announcement was made on Thursday evening, with senior party leaders present at the Assam BJP headquarters. The new state committee reflects a mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces from various regions of Assam.

Strengthening Grassroots and Electoral Machinery

State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita said the new team has been structured to improve coordination between the party’s district units and to align with national objectives set by the central leadership.

“This is not just an organisational reshuffle. It’s a roadmap to take our development vision deeper into every household in Assam,” Kalita said.

The appointments come as the party gears up for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and continues preparing for upcoming municipal and panchayat polls.

New Appointments Highlight Inclusivity

The BJP has aimed to strike a balance between seniority and youth. Further, women leaders and members from tribal and minority communities have been inducted in key roles to widen the party’s appeal.

Some notable appointments include:

  • Dr. Arati Borah as vice-president
  • Bijoy Boro as general secretary (organisation)
  • Mohammad Junaid Hussain as minority cell coordinator
  • Kalpana Deka as head of women’s wing

The party has also retained key strategists from previous campaigns to ensure continuity in policy messaging and coordination.

Focus on Development and Outreach

The BJP said that public outreach campaigns, especially in rural and backward areas, will be a priority for the new committee. This will include “booth-level empowerment,” digital campaigning, and welfare scheme awareness drives.

Kalita also emphasised the importance of showcasing the state government’s achievements under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Be it maternal health, education, roads, or power — our committee’s job will be to take real stories of change directly to the people,” he said.

Also, the party plans to hold orientation camps for the newly appointed members to align them with this agenda.

Opposition Reacts to Reshuffle

Reacting to the announcement, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) spokesperson Pranav Das said the BJP is “merely decorating old furniture with new covers.”

“No committee can mask the people’s frustration over unemployment and rising prices,” Das said.

However, political analysts view the reshuffle as a strategic response to changing political dynamics in the region. With the Congress regaining ground in certain districts, BJP’s proactive restructuring is seen as timely.

Eye on Northeast Strategy

The state-level reshuffle is part of a larger organisational revamp that BJP is currently undertaking in several northeastern states. As the party looks to consolidate its strength in the region, Assam remains central to its Northeast strategy.

The central leadership has also instructed state units to ensure regular feedback mechanisms from local populations and prepare comprehensive reports before the national executive meeting next month.
